Representative ImageTravellers across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region are proving resilient in the face of global uncertainties, according to Booking.com's inaugural Travel Happiness Index. Despite challenges such as extreme weather and political instability, the research shows that 90% of APAC travellers prefer to adapt their plans rather than cancel them. The index, based on insights from 10,000 travellers across 10 APAC markets, highlights the emotional, financial, and social factors influencing travel decisions.
The study reveals that travel remains a significant source of joy and mental well-being, with 84% of respondents stating it helps them reset emotionally. Additionally, 86% find that having a trip to look forward to boosts their mood. APAC travellers are increasingly valuing simple pleasures, such as natural scenery and quality time with loved ones, over packed itineraries. This shift is leading to more intentional travel choices, including prioritising local experiences and extending trips for relaxation.
Despite concerns about costs and safety, APAC travellers are not deterred. Instead, they are leveraging digital tools to enhance their travel planning. The report notes that 84% of travellers find digital tools make planning and booking easier, with 72% using them to compare travel options. Trust in booking platforms remains high, with 88% feeling more at ease when using trusted services.
Laura Houldsworth, Managing Director, Asia Pacific at Booking.com, emphasised the importance of travel as a means of reconnecting and exploring, even in uncertain times. As travellers continue to adapt, the role of technology and trusted platforms is expected to grow, facilitating smoother and more meaningful travel experiences
