Brazilian villages vie for UN tourism recognition

Seven Brazilian destinations are competing in the Best Tourism Villages 2026 initiative, organised by UN Tourism. These villages—Araçá, Conceição de Ibitipoca, Delfinópolis, Holambra, Lençóis, São José do Barreiro, and Vila Flores—are among 268 global candidates. The results will be announced in December in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

These villages exemplify how tourism supports local economies by preserving cultural heritage and creating jobs. For instance, Araçá in Santa Catarina thrives on artisanal fishing, whilst Holambra in São Paulo is renowned for its flower cultivation, earning it the title of Brazil’s National Capital of Flowers. Meanwhile, Lençóis in Bahia serves as a gateway to Chapada Diamantina, attracting adventurers with its natural beauty.

The initiative, launched in 2021, has seen over 1,000 applications from 100 countries. It recognises communities that leverage tourism to protect heritage and enhance local livelihoods. Villages with up to 15,000 inhabitants can apply, provided they engage in activities like agriculture and fishing, and are committed to preserving their cultural values.

Brazil has previously seen two villages recognised: Testo Alto in Santa Catarina, known for its German heritage, and Antônio Prado in Rio Grande do Sul, which celebrates Italian traditions. With this year’s entries, Brazil has submitted 27 villages since the award's inception. This recognition highlights the potential of small communities to gain prominence in global tourism whilst maintaining their unique identities
