Emmy-nominated PBS host and author Darley Newman is set to release her new book, "Revolutionary Road Trip: Hidden Stories of America's Founding Journey," on 30 June.
The book invites readers to explore overlooked sites and stories from the American Revolution, offering a fresh perspective on the nation's history as it approaches its 250th anniversary.
Drawing from her extensive travels for the PBS series and podcast "Travels with Darley," Newman delves into the original thirteen colonies, uncovering narratives often absent from conventional history books. "When people think about the American Revolution, they often picture places like Boston, Philadelphia, and Yorktown," Newman remarked. "I travelled beyond those well-known locations to uncover hidden gems and explore how everyday people shaped the nation's founding in remarkable ways."
The book takes readers to a variety of locations, including Revolutionary War battlefields, colonial taverns, and historic cities such as Charleston and Princeton. It also highlights local cuisine and preservation efforts in places like Charleston and Camden, South Carolina, and the Brandywine Valley in Pennsylvania. Alongside these historical explorations, Newman shares personal adventures, such as sampling Martha Washington's Cherry Bounce recipe and visiting Camden Battlefield with a veteran.
To promote the book, Newman will embark on a tour with appearances in cities including Charleston, Saratoga Springs, and Greensboro. Through her work, Newman aims to inspire readers to visit these historical sites and experience the stories where they unfolded, keeping America's history alive for future generations
