From Muscat to Kigali: SalamAir lands in Rwanda

Oman’s fast-growing low-cost carrier SalamAir is deepening its African footprint with the launch of a new direct service to Kigali, Rwanda, as it continues to target high-growth markets across the continent. The carrier has opened sales for the new route, with flights scheduled to begin on 21 July 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. SalamAir will operate two weekly flights between Muscat and Kigali every Tuesday and Thursday, offering travellers direct and affordable access between Oman and one of East Africa’s fastest-rising destinations.

The latest expansion comes as Gulf carriers increasingly look to Africa for new growth opportunities, driven by rising business travel, tourism demand, and stronger trade links between the Middle East and the continent.

Known as one of Africa’s cleanest and fastest-transforming capitals, Kigali has emerged as a major regional hub for business, conferences, innovation, and eco-tourism. Rwanda has recorded steady growth in visitor arrivals and investment over the past few years, supported by its expanding meetings industry, wildlife tourism, and pro-business environment.

From mountain gorilla experiences and national parks to a growing startup ecosystem, Rwanda has successfully positioned itself as one of Africa’s most dynamic destinations — making Kigali a strategic addition to SalamAir’s evolving route map. Talking about the expansion, Steven Allen, Chief Commercial Officer at SalamAir, said: “Kigali is a natural addition to our growing African network, offering strong fundamentals across business and leisure travel. Rwanda has seen consistent growth in tourism and business travel in recent years. Kigali itself is a vibrant, modern gateway — known for its culture, markets, and historical landmarks — and it opens the door to some of Africa’s most compelling nature and eco-tourism attractions.” He added: “As part of our wider network strategy, we remain focused on linking Oman with high-growth markets through affordable, reliable, and direct connectivity.”

The Kigali launch marks another strategic step in SalamAir’s broader expansion across Africa, as the airline continues to build connections between Oman and emerging economic centres. The carrier has increasingly focused on underserved point-to-point routes, tapping into growing demand from business travellers, expatriate communities, and leisure passengers.

For Oman, stronger connectivity with Africa also supports the Sultanate’s broader ambitions under Vision 2040, which identifies aviation, tourism, and trade as key pillars of economic diversification. As competition intensifies among Gulf airlines for access to Africa’s rapidly expanding aviation market, SalamAir’s latest move signals its intent to carve out a stronger niche in one of the world’s most promising travel corridors.
