Filipino travellers shopping abroad can now benefit from instant digital tax refunds through their GCash wallets, thanks to a new feature powered by Alipay+ and Global Blue. This service allows users to receive eligible tax refunds directly in Philippine Pesos (PHP) via the GCash app, initially available in 16 countries including Italy, Germany, and France.

Traditionally, travellers faced the choice of receiving refunds in foreign currency, which could be cumbersome upon returning home, or enduring a wait of one to four weeks for bank or credit card credits. The new GCash feature eliminates these delays and potential currency conversion losses by integrating seamlessly into the existing airport tax refund process. After customs validation, users can generate a QR code via the GCash app, which, once scanned, credits the refund instantly to their wallet.

Carlos Bauza, Vice President for International Payments at GCash International, stated, “Through Digital Tax Refund, we are giving Filipino travellers a faster and more convenient way to receive the money they are entitled to directly in Philippine pesos through the GCash app they already use every day.”

This initiative highlights the ongoing evolution of digital financial services, aiming to simplify cross-border transactions and enhance the travel experience for Filipinos. With plans to expand to more countries, the service promises to save time and maximise the value of purchases for travellers globally.
