Geopolitical tensions and political instability are significantly impacting international travel plans for 2026, with nearly 29% of seasoned travellers altering their itineraries due to safety concerns, according to the Global Rescue Traveller Sentiment and Safety Survey. The survey highlights that 72% of experienced travellers consider geopolitical issues when choosing destinations, with 42% stating these factors influence their decisions greatly.

The survey, conducted by Global Rescue, a leading travel risk management provider, found that among those who changed their plans, 9% opted for alternative destinations, 7% postponed trips, and 6% cancelled altogether. Despite the uncertainties, 71% of travellers are proceeding with their original plans.

Dan Richards, CEO of The Global Rescue Companies, noted, "Travellers aren't giving up on international travel; they're making more informed decisions about where and when to go." He emphasised the importance of understanding the rapidly evolving geopolitical conditions that can affect travel logistics and safety.

The survey also revealed differences between US-based and non-US-based travellers. Whilst 72% of US travellers are influenced by security concerns, 28% have altered their plans. In contrast, 74% of non-US travellers consider security issues, with nearly 29% changing their plans, often opting for different destinations rather than cancellations.

Experienced travellers rely heavily on government travel advisories, with 49% citing them as their primary information source. Richards stressed the importance of using credible sources, stating, "Experienced travellers don't rely on headlines or social media alone."

The Global Rescue survey, conducted from 30 June to 6 July 2026, underscores the growing need for informed travel decisions amidst global instability.
