Passenger demand at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) continues to surge, with the hub setting two new traffic records in July.

According to the latest data from Hong Kong’s Airport Authority, passenger traffic increased 3.3% year-on-year to 6.5 million last month, while flight movements climbed 3% to 36,270. Both of these figures marked new monthly highs.

The airport’s growth was driven by Hong Kong resident travel and transit traffic, both of which grew 5% year-on-year in July. Routes to and from Japan experienced the strongest growth, while Europe and North America also recorded significant increases.

For the first seven months of 2017, passenger traffic and flight movements increased by 1.6% to 42.2m and 1.2% to 242,840, respectively. And on a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA handled 71m passengers and 414,415 flights, marking year-on-year growth of 0.9% and 0.5% respectively.

HKIA is currently expanding to cater for the rapid rise in passenger traffic; following the launch of its new Midfield Concourse, the airport is now moving forward with plans to expand Terminal One and develop a third runway on reclaimed land.
