Hotel Sacher Vienna marks 150 years with art

Hotel Sacher Vienna, a historic landmark since 1876, is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a special art installation by renowned Austrian artist Erwin Wurm. On 26 March, the sculptures "Step Big" and "Dancer" were unveiled at the hotel's entrance in a ceremony attended by Wurm, Vienna's Mayor Michael Ludwig, and the hotel's owner family. These sculptures will remain on display throughout the anniversary year, symbolising the hotel's enduring legacy and its connection to art and culture.

The sculptures, described as oversized handbags on slender legs, offer a poetic reflection on the invisible baggage shaped by one's origin, history, and experience. Erwin Wurm explained, "I made these walking, jumping, dancing, and stepping bags to address certain ideas about how we design ourselves, how we present ourselves, how we pretend what we want to be, and how we want to be seen."

Hotel Sacher Vienna, famous for the Original Sacher-Torte created by Franz Sacher in 1832, has been a beacon of Viennese hospitality and culture. Since its opening by Eduard Sacher in 1876, the hotel has become an internationally renowned meeting place. It remains one of the few privately owned, family-run five-star superior hotels and is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

The unveiling of Wurm's sculptures marks the start of a series of anniversary celebrations, including messages from prominent personalities and a short film. More details about the celebrations can be found on the hotel's website
