Travellers visiting North Carolina's welcome centres will soon have the opportunity to delve into the state's rich historical past, thanks to the newly launched North Carolina History Explorer kiosks. These interactive kiosks, which debuted at the I-77 South Carolina Welcome Centre, will be installed across all welcome centres in the state in the coming weeks, offering insights into North Carolina's significant role from the American Revolution through the Civil War.
David Duncan, President of the American Battlefield Trust, emphasised the importance of these kiosks, stating, "North Carolina played a pivotal role in our nation's formative conflicts, and people need to know this history." The kiosks aim to inspire visitors to explore these historical sites in person.
The North Carolina History Explorer, developed by the American Battlefield Trust in collaboration with Interactive Knowledge, the North Carolina Department of Commerce, and America 250 NC, utilises maps, photography, and multimedia content to engage users. The kiosks are structured around three key historical periods: "Our Revolutionary Journey" (1771–1783), "From Statehood to Secession" (1784–1861), and "A State Divided" (1861–1865).
Ansley Herring Wegner, director of America 250 NC, highlighted the educational value of the kiosks, noting that they provide a deeper understanding of North Carolina's contributions to American history. The flagship kiosk, installed in the state's legislative building in April, will remain there until the end of 2026, continuing to educate lawmakers and visitors alike.
The American Battlefield Trust, a non-profit organisation, is committed to preserving America's battlegrounds and educating the public on their historical significance
