Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) has placed an order for its first Airbus H160 helicopter, aiming to strengthen its emergency response capabilities across the nation. Stationed in Kumamoto prefecture, the H160 will join the existing fleet to improve speed and coverage during natural disasters, such as potential megaquakes.

Jean-Luc Alfonsi, Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in Japan, expressed honour at the FDMA's choice, stating, "By integrating this aircraft, the FDMA will significantly enhance its operational readiness and reduce emergency reaction times." The H160 is equipped with Helisat advanced satellite technology, allowing real-time data streaming to bypass damaged ground infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted visibility for emergency commanders.

The helicopter's deployment builds on Kumamoto's history of using advanced aircraft for disaster management, following the introduction of the AS365N3 in 2001 and its upgrade to the AS365N3+ in 2018. The H160's addition represents a significant technological advancement, offering superior range, safety, and operational capabilities.

The FDMA's selection of the H160 reflects a growing trend across Japan, with the aircraft becoming increasingly popular among municipal and prefectural agencies.
