The study highlights that several routes across Japan are quicker, easier, and cheaper by train, with Google searches for 'Shinkansen' up 94% year on year.

The analysis reveals that travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen takes just 140 minutes, compared to 275 minutes by air, saving passengers 135 minutes. The train journey is direct, avoiding the need for additional transport from Osaka, where flights typically land, to Kyoto city centre. The cost of a train ticket is approximately $85 (£70), matching the average flight price.

Similarly, the Tokyo to Kanazawa route takes 150 minutes by train, saving 115 minutes over the 265-minute flight journey. The Shinkansen ticket costs $90 (£74), significantly less than the $229 (£188) flight, offering both time and cost savings.

On the popular Tokyo to Osaka route, the Shinkansen takes 155 minutes, compared to 250 minutes by air, saving 95 minutes. Although the train ticket is slightly more expensive at $89 (£73) compared to $69 (£57) for a flight, the convenience of direct city centre travel makes it a preferred choice.

Travelling from Osaka to Fukuoka by train saves 90 minutes, with the journey taking 140 minutes compared to 230 minutes by air. Despite flights starting at $57 (£47) and train tickets from $93 (£77), the added convenience and reduced additional costs make the Shinkansen an attractive option.
