Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort Fiji Reopens After Multi‑Million‑Dollar Makeover With New Two‑Bedroom Family Bures

The luxury ecoresort will welcome guests back to a reimagined version of the much‑loved property

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort in Savusavu, Fiji is set to reopen on 1st April after the most extensive, multi‑million‑dollar renovation in its history, unveiling refreshed bures, upgraded wellness spaces and brand‑new two‑bedroom oceanfront accommodation for extended families.

After a planned closure from January 26 to March 31, 2026, the eco‑luxury resort on Savusavu Bay will welcome guests back to a reimagined version of the much‑loved property. The refresh has touched almost every corner of the resort, from guest bures and shared spaces to wellness and recreation facilities, while carefully preserving the intimate, culturally immersive feel that long‑time guests return for.

Importantly, every resort team member from neighbouring villages was retained throughout the closure and played an active role in the project, reinforcing the resort’s deep community roots. That means the warm “bula” spirit and familiar faces that define the Jean‑Michel Cousteau experience are still very much at the heart of the new look.

New two‑bedroom oceanfront bures for extended families

At the centre of the renovation is a major accommodation upgrade tailored to the rise of multi‑generational and extended family travel. Five former one‑bedroom oceanfront bures have been transformed into spacious two‑bedroom, two‑bathroom ocean‑facing residences designed for families who want more space, privacy and connection.

Each new bure offers generous indoor‑outdoor living, with extended decks, daybeds and outdoor dining for six so everyone can gather for sunset dinners without feeling cramped. Across the resort, bures have been rethatched for durability in Fiji’s tropical climate and refreshed with refinished millwork and flooring, new paint, modern lighting, plus new bedding and linens for a lighter, more contemporary feel.

Traditional magimagi – woven coconut‑fibre rope central to Fijian craftsmanship – has been woven into beams and pillars throughout the accommodations and public areas, deepening the sense of place and celebrating local heritage in a subtle, tactile way.

Elevated wellness and recreation on the bay

Wellness has always been a core part of the Jean‑Michel Cousteau story, and the renovation builds on that legacy with a new 900‑square‑foot, ocean‑facing fitness centre overlooking Savusavu Bay. Fully air‑conditioned and equipped with cardio machines, weight equipment, free weights and stretching accessories, it offers a serene setting to move your body while watching the water.

The new gym complements the existing Fijian spa and open‑air yoga platform, creating a rounded wellness experience that balances guided treatments, self‑care and nature‑immersed movement. For more active guests, resurfaced tennis, pickleball and basketball courts add fresh energy to the resort’s recreational line‑up.

Design rooted in Fijian heritage and landscape

Visually, the resort’s new chapter leans into its Fijian identity. Refreshed interiors blend handcrafted textures and locally sourced timbers with modern comforts, creating spaces that feel both relaxed and refined. Reception, dining venues and the main pool area have all been revitalised with updated furnishings, improved lighting, refreshed finishes and rebuilt decking that opens up views to the bay.

Landscaping across the property has been thoughtfully restored to enhance the lush, tropical feel that makes the resort so distinctive, with pathways and gardens framing ocean vistas and sunset spots. The design work, completed in collaboration with Langlois Design and local partners, keeps the property grounded in its Fijian setting rather than chasing a generic “international” look.

A perfect place for families, couples and discerning eco‑travellers

With its expanded family bures, stronger wellness offering and renewed sense of place, Jean‑Michel Cousteau Resort is positioning itself as one of Fiji’s most distinctive luxury escapes. Extended families now have room to spread out, couples still find secluded corners and spa rituals, and eco‑conscious travellers can enjoy a refreshed resort that continues to work closely with local communities.
