Maharashtra's government has introduced a comprehensive Adventure Tourism Policy to regulate and promote adventure tourism across the state. Announced on 24 August 2021, the policy aims to ensure safety and encourage growth in the sector by establishing a formal registration and certification process for operators.
The policy has already received 809 applications, with 692 operators granted official certification. It applies to various entities, including individuals, organisations, non-profits, and training institutes involved in adventure tourism activities. The policy mandates safety measures, requiring organisers to obtain permissions from local authorities, especially in areas like Brihanmumbai, to ensure law and order and manage traffic.
Tourism Minister Shambhuraj Desai highlighted the policy's dual focus on attracting tourists and creating employment opportunities. "This Adventure Tourism Policy is not only for attracting more tourists but also provides employment opportunities for the youth," he stated.
Principal Secretary Sanjay Khandare emphasised the policy's role in the state's economic growth, noting its focus on tourist safety and job creation. Director of Tourism B. N. Patil added that the policy supports infrastructure development and the preservation of natural heritage.
The policy outlines strict safety protocols, including the maintenance of equipment, presence of expert guides, and installation of safety features like watchtowers and sirens at tourism sites. It also requires organisers to inform participants of potential risks and mandates parental consent for participants under 18.
With the policy in place, Maharashtra aims to elevate its adventure tourism sector to a global level, offering activities like mountaineering, parasailing, and scuba diving, whilst ensuring the safety and enjoyment of tourists
