Mauritius boosts ties with India as tourism grows

Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) has intensified its engagement with India, launching a four-city initiative in Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. This marks the third marketing operation in India since January 2026, underscoring the country's significance as a key tourism market. From January to July 2026, Mauritius saw a 14.5% increase in Indian visitors, totalling 51,005 arrivals, reflecting the destination's growing appeal among Indian travellers.

The initiative, targeting cities with high outbound travel potential, involved over 20 tourism partners from Mauritius, including hotels and airlines. It aimed to showcase Mauritius beyond its traditional beach holidays, highlighting opportunities in leisure, luxury, wellness, and adventure travel. Travel advisers were provided insights into evolving traveller preferences, enabling them to craft diverse itineraries.

Mauritius offers Indian travellers a blend of beaches, cultural heritage, and adventure, with attractions like Grand Bassin and Black River Gorges. The island's appeal is further enhanced by visa-free access, a multicultural environment, and direct flights from major Indian cities.

Benoit Harter, Director - India, MTPA, emphasised the deep cultural ties between the two nations, stating, "India is much more than an important tourism market for Mauritius; it is a market with which we share deep cultural and historical connections."

Looking ahead, MTPA plans to continue strengthening its India strategy through trade partnerships and media initiatives, positioning Mauritius as a year-round destination for Indian travellers.
