Melbourne Airport reveals ambitious 2027 Master Plan

Melbourne Airport has unveiled its draft Master Plan 2027, detailing a 20-year vision to accommodate a projected doubling of passenger numbers to 75 million annually by 2047. The plan includes significant infrastructure developments, such as new and expanded pick-up and drop-off zones set to open in October, and a privately funded $4.5 billion (US$4.5 billion) expansion of the international terminal.

The draft Master Plan also outlines upgrades to domestic terminals and infrastructure to support the growth of Australia's domestic airlines. Enhancing local connectivity is a key focus, with plans for new road infrastructure, improved bus connections, and rail access to the city via Sunshine.

A notable feature of the plan is the Eastern Extension Project, which proposes a 345-metre extension of the east-west runway to accommodate the construction of a third runway. Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus emphasised the importance of planning for future growth, stating, “We need to plan ahead to ensure we have the airfield, terminal and ground transport infrastructure in place to adequately service the growing number of travellers, exporters and importers who are using Melbourne Airport.”

The plan also highlights the development of a business park to create more employment opportunities in Melbourne's north and west, integrating sustainability through low carbon design and resource efficiency. Public submissions on the draft Master Plan are open until 4 November.
