London City Airport submits application to accommodate the A320neo

London City Airport (LCY) has submitted an application to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) that would, if approved, enable the Airbus A320neo to operate at the Capital’s most centrally located airport. Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, said: “The potential introduction of the A320neo aircraft at London City Airport is incredibly exciting. It would broaden the range of leisure destinations for our passengers, enable growth without increasing the number of flight movements, deliver much needed economic growth and accelerate refleeting to cleaner, quieter, new generation aircraft.” London City is seeking to introduce cleaner, quieter aircraft as part of its plans to grow in the most sustainable way possible. The application, which has been lodged, would enable London City to reach its permitted passenger capacity with fewer flight movements, stimulating economic growth while maintaining operational efficiency. It would open up a range of possible new routes for passengers while incentivising airlines to modernise their fleet from older to newer generation aircraft such as the Airbus A320neo, which are more fuel efficient, more environmentally friendly and quieter. In August 2024, the Government approved London City’s plans to increase its annual passenger cap from 6.5 million to 9 million by 2031 as a driver of economic growth. This included no increase to the permitted number of annual flights and no new infrastructure. The airport sees the possible introduction of the A320neo as key to building its leisure offering. The aircraft is able to carry over 180 passengers depending on the preferred seat configuration and can travel over 1,000km, which covers large parts of mainland Europe. The application is specifically asking the CAA to approve a new flight procedure (RNP AR) which would alter the approach angle for this aircraft at each runway end. The current approach angle limits the type of aircraft that use the airport and requires those that can be certified for a steep approach.

Kazhakstan’s Air Astana group recently took delivery of an Airbus A320neo, bringing its fleet up to 56 aircraft.  The new aircraft comes equipped with 16 Business Class seats and 132 Economy Class seats. There are now 50 Airbus family aircraft in the Air Astana Group fleet, with another two scheduled for delivery before the end of the year.  In line with Air Astana Group’s strategic goals of reducing environmental impact and enhancing operational efficiency, the new Airbus aircraft joining the fleet feature advanced technologies that reduce emissions, lower noise levels, and minimize fuel burn, while delivering increased range.  These aircraft will play a crucial role in supporting the Group’s commitment to sustainability, providing a greener, more efficient fleet for the future. Necessary for rapid growth Airline CEO Peter Foster declared that Air Astana is currently in the middle of a new phase in its development in light of the significant growth seen in terms of international and domestic passenger traffic. With regard to the choice of aircraft, Foster said: “The Airbus A320 family of aircraft has proven to be an outstanding success in service with both Air Astana and FlyArystan, with the fleet destined to continue rapidly expanding over the next few years.” Ahead of schedule It is worth noting that Air Astana Group’s fleet is expanding ahead of schedule, growing from 49 aircraft at the end of 2023 to its current complement of 56 aircraft.  This proactive capacity addition with Airbus aircraft aims to mitigate Pratt & Whitney engine issues, optimize the Group’s network and its growth strategy.

Avolon orders 310 new engines to power  A320neo family aircraft

Avolon, a global aviation finance company, announces orders  for 310 new engines to power 155 Airbus A320neo family aircraft in its order book. The combined orders, announced today at the Farnborough Airshow, are valued at over US$5 billion  at current list prices. The agreement also includes options to purchase a further 160 Pratt & Whitney  engines and 150 CFM International engines. The orders represent Avolon’s largest ever engine  commitment. Both engine types help to lower carbon emissions by delivering at least 15% reduced fuel consumption compared to previous generation engine technology, and also reduced noise levels. Transitioning the  global fleet to new technology aircraft is the biggest near-term action that can be taken to reduce  aviation emissions, and Avolon is committed to a target of having over 75% of its fleet comprising the  youngest, most fuel-efficient aircraft by the end of 2025. Beyond its 2025 target, the evolution of its  fleet will be supported by deliveries of the A320 neo family aircraft out to 2032 that these engines will  power. Avolon currently has 115 A320neo family aircraft in its delivered and managed fleet, of which 39 are  powered by Pratt & Whitney engines and 76 by CFM International engines. Following its order for 100  A321neo aircraft in December 2023, Avolon now has an orderbook of 279 A320neo family aircraft. Andy Cronin, CEO Avolon, commented: “These engines will power our orderbook of A320neo  family aircraft and put us in an excellent position to service our customers’ narrowbody requirements  out to 2030 and beyond. Engine innovation has been one of the key tools to lower emissions and  support the industry’s decarbonisation journey. We are delighted to be working with both Pratt &  Whitney and CFM International, and excited about leveraging their engines to support the transition  of our fleet to more fuel-efficient technology.”

Vietnam Airlines augments fleet with Airbus A320neo

Vietnam Airlines received the first of three new Airbus A320neos, expanding its fleet in time for the height of summer travel. Vietnam Airlines assigns the new aircraft to domestic routes, including Hanoi to Dalat, Hanoi to Phu Quoc, Ho Chi Minh City to Thanh Hoa, along with Ho Chi Minh City to Chu Lai.   The addition of the three Airbus A320neo units reaffirms Vietnam Airlines’ commitment to fleet modernisation and operational enhancement to meet increasing travel demand, especially during the summer season. The Boeing 787-10 is the largest member of the Dreamliner family and the largest passenger aircraft in Vietnam Airlines’ current fleet. The Airbus difference The modern narrow-body Airbus A320neo features next-generation engines, significantly resulting in 16 percent fuel savings, 75 percent noise reduction, and 50 percent lower emissions compared to older aircraft.   This Airbus A320neo has 182 seats and is configured in a two-class layout, with eight Business Class seats and 174 Economy Class seats, complemented by comfortable upholstery; 28- to 29-inch seat pitch and five-inch recline; and a wireless IFE system on top of other amenities. Fifth A320neo with the registration LZR lands at Austrian Airlines in Vienna

Austrian Airlines welcomes an early "New Year's baby" and receives another aircraft from the Airbus factory in Toulouse on the New Year's Eve weekend. The fifth A320neo, which will fly in white until its final livery with the Austrian livery in spring, landed today at 11.46 a.m.. The new short and medium-haul aircraft with the registration LZR comes directly from the Airbus factory in Toulouse and is expected to take the first passengers to their destinations in just a few weeks. The aircraft with the Thayatal registration will complete the A320neo fleet of the red-white-red home airline.  The first four A320neo aircraft were already integrated into the Austrian fleet between August 2022 and July 2023. Depending on the route, the operation of an Airbus A320neo can save up to 3,700 tons of CO2 per year compared to the respective predecessor model, as they consume up to 20 percent less fuel thanks to modern engine technology and improved aerodynamics. The new aircraft thus make an important contribution to Austrian Airlines' fuel efficiency, increase profitability and at the same time represent an important long-term investment in Vienna as a business location. "The arrival of our fifth A320neo is a wonderful end to the year for Austrian Airlines and a gift for our passengers, who can look forward to even more travel comfort on board. In the coming years, Austrian Airlines will modernize both its short and medium-haul fleet as well as its long-haul fleet. The use of modern and fuel-efficient aircraft is, alongside the use of sustainable fuels, the greatest lever for achieving our ambitious climate targets," says Austrian Airlines COO Francesco Sciortino. Innovative Airspace Cabin increases comfort The fifth aircraft, which now has a capacity of 180 seats, will further enhance travel comfort on short and medium-haul routes. Thanks to the innovative Airspace Cabin and slimmer side walls, passengers are offered even more personal space, particularly in the shoulder area. Compared to the previous design, the new cabin concept is also characterized by an up to 60 percent larger capacity for hand baggage. In addition, a new, flexible lighting system that adapts to passengers' natural biorhythms increases their sense of well-being on board. Depending on the flight phase and time of day, the cabin and washrooms are bathed in warm red or cooler blue tones.
