Wingsuit flight over Bangkok boosts Thai tourism
In a groundbreaking event, Hollywood stuntman Miles Daisher completed a historic wingsuit flight over Bangkok, reaching speeds of 260 km/h. Supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Red Bull, this aerial feat underscores Thailand's ambition to become a global hub for extreme sports and adventure tourism. The flight, which took place on 2 April 2026, saw Daisher leap from an aeroplane and soar past the iconic lebua at State Tower before landing on a vessel along the Chao Phraya River. TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool highlighted the event as part of Thailand's strategy to enhance sports tourism and attract high-value travellers seeking unique experiences. "By creating distinctive, high-value experiences, we aim to attract quality travellers seeking meaningful and memorable journeys," she stated. TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, Nithee Seeprae, emphasised the significance of bringing such an activity to an urban setting, saying, "By bringing an activity typically associated with natural landscapes into the heart of Bangkok, we are demonstrating Thailand’s adaptability." The operation required precise technical coordination due to the complex wind conditions of Bangkok's urban environment. Daisher, with over 12,000 skydives, noted the challenge of navigating turbulent air patterns to achieve a successful landing. His participation signals growing international interest in Thailand as a location for advanced aerial sports. The event not only showcased Bangkok's architectural landmarks but also reinforced the city's capacity to host world-class sporting events. Future plans include exploring coastal areas like Railay Beach and Ton Sai Beach in Krabi for similar activities This story was selected and published by a human editor, with content adapted from original press material using AI tools. U.S. Embassy Bangkok Townhall Offered Clarity, Candor and Connection
Bangkok, Thailand. Some events leave you with a notebook full of talking points. Others leave you with something more useful: a changed perspective. A recent townhall at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok did exactly that. Held at the ambassador’s residence on March 13, 2026, the gathering brought together embassy leadership, staff and invited guests for a conversation that felt unusually direct, thoughtful and grounded in real concerns. For those in the room, the morning offered more than updates. It offered a clearer sense of how diplomacy, mobility and trust continue to shape the wider travel landscape. At the center of the session was U.S. Ambassador to Thailand Sean K. O’Neill, whose presence set the tone early. During his introduction, he was described as someone who speaks five languages. With an easy sense of humor, he gently corrected the record, saying that he had studied five languages. It was a small moment, but a telling one: modest, self-aware and immediately disarming. According to his official embassy biography, those languages are Thai, Chinese, Burmese, Bengali and Japanese. That same tone carried through the rest of the townhall. Ambassador O’Neill and embassy staff did not seem interested in sugarcoating much. Questions were answered plainly. Uncertainty was acknowledged where it existed. And in a world where official communication can sometimes feel overly polished, that straightforwardness made a strong impression. Trade, Visas and Border Guidance Several issues discussed during the session had direct relevance for those working in travel, tourism, education and international business. Tariffs were one of them. The sense in the room was that getting a deal in place remains a priority for all sides once the new government is seated. No one tried to oversell the timeline, but the message was clear enough: the issue remains active, and there is strong interest in moving it forward. Visa policy also drew close attention. Officials explained that immigrant visa issuance is currently paused, but applications are still being processed. They also clarified that K-1 (fiancé) visas remain available, an important distinction for families navigating international mobility. The embassy also addressed the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border. That part of the discussion aligned with the embassy’s current security messaging, which advises U.S. citizens to avoid all travel within 50 kilometers of the Thailand-Cambodia border because of active hostilities and the unpredictability of the conflict. For travel advisors, operators, university leaders and anyone responsible for moving people safely across the region, that kind of guidance matters. STEP and Staying Connected One of the most practical parts of the morning focused on the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service that allows Americans abroad to receive alerts and updates from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. For travelers and travel professionals alike, STEP is one of those tools that can seem easy to ignore until it becomes essential. It provides country-specific email alerts and helps embassy officials contact travelers, or their emergency contacts, during emergencies. The U.S. Embassy in Thailand has also encouraged Americans to re-enroll in the newer STEP system, emphasizing its role in helping citizens stay connected and informed while abroad. In a region where conditions can shift quickly, the reminder landed as one of the session’s most useful takeaways. For an industry built on movement, timely information is never a small thing. A Familiar Face, A Lasting Connection Still, what gave the townhall its heart was not only the policy discussion. It was the people in the room. One especially warm moment came in reconnecting with Sandy, a longtime embassy staff member and a familiar, friendly face to many Assumption University students and faculty who, over the years, have interned with or engaged the embassy through academic and professional opportunities. It was a brief exchange, but one that carried real weight. In that moment, the embassy felt less like a distant institution and more like a place shaped by continuity, generosity and empathy. Thanks, Sandy! That may have been the most lasting takeaway of all. The townhall offered useful signals for travel leaders, yes, but it also showed something more personal. In a time when so much international engagement feels filtered through headlines and uncertainty, direct conversation still matters. So does warmth. So does access. My thanks to Ambassador Sean O’Neill and to the embassy and consulate team for their generosity, candor, and gracious welcome. In a world full of noise, there is something powerful about people who take the time to answer honestly, listen carefully, and make others feel seen. After 25 years in Thailand, including 20 years at Assumption University, I still value moments that deepen understanding and strengthen connection. This was one of them.

Luxury hospitality pivots to secondary markets as Singapore, Bangkok hit maturity
At the recently concluded AHICE Southeast Asia held in Singapore, one of the key points of discussion was luxury hospitality and how, like other aspects of the industry, it continues to evolve and thrive despite current global crises. During the panel The Luxury Market Outlook moderated by Jones Lang Lasalle (JLL) senior vice-president for advisory in Asia Cleavon Tan, growth sectors in the region are shifting from Singapore and Bangkok to emergent locations in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Likewise, the industry is prime for investment and remains resilient despite socioeconomic and geopolitical upheaval. Resilience and growth Speaking at AHICE, Hyatt Hotels Corporation’s regional vice-president for development in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines Bastien Touzeau opines that the luxury hospitality sector isn’t just resilient, but also happens to be a prime segment for industrial growth. Touzeau remarked: “We are seeing that there is a very rapid growth in terms of travellers, whether they are within Asia, or about to come into Asia.” He cited a recent report from Mordor Intelligence which pointed out how the luxury Asia-Pacific hotel market will bring in around US$37 billion in revenues by end-2026, up from the US$34 billion recorded at the end of 2025. It is also likely that the sectoral revenue will reach US$58 billion over the next five years, an encouraging prospect for the sector as a whole. Touzeau added: “When it comes to Hyatt, we are seeing that more than 60 percent of our hotels in our Asia Pacific portfolio are in that luxury premium segment. Looking ahead, we have more than 90 luxury lifestyle properties that are going to open in the region. So all those signs show that there is going to be growth for the luxury segment within Southeast Asia.” Perspectives from the resort sector For The Lux Collective’s chief operating officer in the Asia Pacific Nitesh Pandey, one trend that hospitality professionals need to keep an eye on is experiential luxury. Pandey said: “I think experiential luxury is definitely there to stay and to grow. However, if you are in generic luxury, you may have challenges in the future.” For experiential luxury to thrive, differentiation is absolutely critical, especially now that the industry is shifting from a post-COVID recovery mindset to a more disciplined approach to growth and development. As Pandey puts it: “In this approach, guests are more focused, guests are more very critical of what they want. Owners are very analytical at the same time, so building the guest experience is always the way forward.” Pandey warns however that there is a need to strike a balance from the owners’ point of view, especially as resorts and luxury accommodations cost more to maintain and operate. He said of this: “Owners are looking for leaner management, more staff efficiency, a greater use of technology to back up the house and control costs.” Introducing the modern luxury traveller Bryan Chan, vice-president for development in Southeast Asia and Korea for IHG Hotels & Resorts, According to Chan: “There was a statistic wherein by 2030, 80 percent of luxury travellers are going to be millennials, Gen Z, or Gen Alpha. I think that's really big because that's kind of that YOLO experiential traveller willing to set aside more money for luxury or experiences. So they’re the ones driving the growth of the sector.” Chan added that the luxury hospitality sector is further segmenting, especially now that we have conventional luxury and ultra-luxury. Barefoot luxury in tropical destinations continues to gain sway within the Asia Pacific, and hotel management companies and luxury hospitality firms are all scrambling to cater to the growing demand for more bespoke experiences, solid proof that luxury hospitality remains a sector worth keeping an eye on.

Open to guests and locals alike, E/R/N stands for “eat / rest / nourish,” and serves fresh, balanced food from morning coffee through to relaxed evening dining. The menu is currently being refined with medical and wellness specialists and will include nourishing bowls, light mains, comfort classics and fresh juices, all with a strong focus on plant-forward and recovery-friendly options. With a 50-seat dining space and open show kitchen, E/R/N is as much a social hub as it is a restaurant: a place to pause between appointments, meet friends, work quietly or unwind at the end of the day.
The Athenee Hotel Bangkok invests in the largest in-property LED screens
The Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Bangkok announced its investment of around THB10 million in a state-of-the-art LED screen system. Essentially the largest system of its kind installed within any hotel ballroom in Bangkok, this innovation reinforces the hotel’s long-term commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the booming Thai MICE industry. According to hotel general manager Blair Fowler: “This strategic investment reflects our confidence in Bangkok’s continued growth as a regional events hub. Today’s global planners expect world-class production standards within premium hospitality settings. Our LED infrastructure enables us to meet those expectations while improving operational efficiency and sustainability.” Events reimagined Installed in both the Crystal Hall Ballroom and the Grand Hall Ballroom, the new LED screens extend up to 27 metres wide and five metres high, transforming traditional ballroom staging into a production-ready visual platform capable of hosting international conferences, corporate summits, large-scale product launches, and immersive brand activations. Beyond visual scale, the LED installation delivers measurable environmental benefits as, compared to conventional projection systems and physical stage backdrops, LED technology significantly reduces energy consumption and eliminates the need for disposable printed panels, vinyl installations, and temporary scenic constructions. Event content can be fully digital, reusable, and adaptable in real time, lowering material waste and post-event disposal. The fine-pitch P2.6 system delivers ultra-high-definition clarity at 800 nits of brightness, optimized specifically for ballroom lighting conditions. Three screen configurations are available at 9 metres, 18 metres, and 27 metres in width, allowing scalable production tailored to event requirements, improving cost efficiency for organizers while minimising unnecessary staging infrastructure. At the same time, state-of-the-art video processing supports ultra-wide scaling, high-resolution playback, and multiple HDMI 2.0 inputs, ensuring seamless integration for complex, multi-source productions. The LED screen is movable and allows organizers to resize, reposition, or split configurations to match agenda formats and staging concepts. Raising the bar for premium hospitality and MICE in the Thai capital The Athenee is one of Thailand’s leading MICE hotels, with 30 meeting rooms available in Bangkok’s city center. With capacity for over 1,500 guests in the Crystal Hall Ballroom and 1,200 guests in the Grand Hall Ballroom, the hotel now combines heritage prestige with technical capabilities typically associated with convention centres, offering a competitive advantage within the luxury hospitality sector. As international business events rebound and brands prioritize immersive storytelling, this investment positions the hotel at the forefront of Bangkok’s high-end MICE market.
