Ports of Stockholm introduces Sweden’s first onshore power connection for cruise ships

Ports of Stockholm recently inaugurated one of Europe's first and Sweden's very first facility for onshore power supply (OPS) for international cruise ships.  The new facility officially began operations on Tuesday, 17 September once the shipping company TUI Cruises'brand new vessel Mein Schiff 7 was connected to the system. Ports of Stockholm chair Jens Holm said of the new OPS: “The inauguration of Sweden's first onshore power connection for cruise ships is an important milestone in creating a premium destination for sustainable cruise traffic, both in Stockholm and throughout the Baltic Sea region. Cruise ships can now connect to electricity from the quayside, greatly reducing their impact on the environment.” The new high-voltage facility is built to international standards and allows ships to switch off their auxiliary engines while at berth. This reduces emissions of air pollutants and reduces noise levels. At least 45 percent of cruise ships calling at Ports of Stockholm can now connect to electricity. The electricity used is 100 percent green and comes from renewable sources such as wind and hydro power. Rewarding those protecting the environment Ports of Stockholm rewards shipping customers who implement environmental improvement measures. This is done by offering discounts on port fees for ships that achieve high environmental performance according to the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) and Clean Shipping Index (CSI). The discounts aim to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and particles. Likewise, the hub is working long-term to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants together with its shipping customers, and to reduce noise levels from ships and port operations. The aim is to achieve zero emissions from shipping in the port areas by 2040. Expanding onshore power connection for ships is one of the key measures to achieve this goal.

Cruise Europe holds a successful conference in Stockholm

On 14–16 May, the Cruise Europe network held its annual general meeting and annual conference in Stockholm. Over a couple of beautiful summer days, visitors were able to experience Stockholm as a popular cruise destination and a sustainable, premium destination. Ports of Stockholm hosted the event together with Stockholm Business Region. Cruise Europe’s members chose Stockholm as the destination to host this year's conference for cruise industry representatives. The comprehensive and well-organised programme provided participants with valuable insights and inspiration about the future. “We are very proud that Cruise Europe members chose Stockholm as the venue for this year's conference. It is an important opportunity for us to showcase our beautiful city and the warm welcome that Stockholm has to offer. We would like to thank everyone involved for a very well organised programme,” says Stefan Scheja, Marketing Manager Ferries and Cruises at Ports of Stockholm and member of the Cruise Europe Board. Ports of Stockholm looks forward to continuing to develop its cooperation with Cruise Europe and other parties in the cruise industry. “It's great to see that Stockholm retains its popularity and continues to be one of the most sought-after cruise destinations. Cruise lines are committed to and actively working on sustainability. They are upgrading their fleets with new technologies that reduce the impact of ships on the environment,” said Jens Skrede, Managing Director of Cruise Europe. A lot of cruise lines are investing in new ships with more modern technology and alternative fuel options. This year, Mein Schiff 7 will be introduced to the Baltic Sea and Ports of Stockholm. The brand-new cruise ship is designed to be able to connect to electricity at the quayside and use methanol as fuel. Queen Anne is another brand-new cruise ship making its debut in Ports of Stockholm this year.

The cruise season begins at Ports of Stockholm

Stockholm is a popular cruise destination, and the season, with a total of 121 cruise ship calls, is now getting underway. Stockholm is positioning itself as a sustainable, premium destination and this year welcomes several brand-new ships with modern technology such as onshore power connection facilities. Ports of Stockholm is also investing in facilities for cruise ships, and is building one of Europe’s first onshore power supply for cruise ships. The cruise season at Ports of Stockholm begins on 16 April when AIDAmar calls in Stockholm. In total, 121 cruise ships are booked to call during the season, which runs until the end of October. This year’s cruise season mirrors the 2023 season closely in terms of the number of calls and number of passengers. “It’s great to see that Stockholm is maintaining its attractiveness and continues to be one of the most popular cruise destinations. The cruise shipping companies are committed to sustainable development and work actively on sustainability initiatives. They are upgrading their fleets with new technology that reduces the impact of their vessels on the environment,” says Stefan Scheja, Marketing Manager Ferries and Cruises at Ports of Stockholm. A number of cruise shipping companies are investing in new vessels with more modern technology and alternative fuels. For example, this year, the Baltic Sea and Ports of Stockholm will welcome brand new cruise ship Mein Schiff 7, which is designed to be able to connect to electricity at the quayside and use methanol as fuel. Queen Anne is another brand-new cruise ship making its debut in Ports of Stockholm this year. Ports of Stockholm is investing in becoming a sustainable, premium destination, and building an onshore power connection facility for cruise ships at the Stadsgården quay. The facility is expected to be completed this year and is one of the first in Europe. Around half of the cruise ships in Ports of Stockholm are expected to be able to connect to electricity at the quayside once ready. Connecting to shore-provided electricity reduces the impact of vessels on the surrounding environment by allowing the auxiliary engines to be shut down, which reduces noise and air pollution. Aboard the ships, the cruise lines work with waste separation at source, separation of organic waste and black and grey water management facilities. The Cruise Baltics network has a sustainability manifesto that aims to make the Baltic Sea the most sustainable cruise ship destination. For example, 19 leading cruise shipping companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding where they commit to use the onshore power connection facilities that are available. These days, the winter cruise season is also popular in Ports of Stockholm and cruise ships have continued to call during the winter months for the past few years.

The company also offers a selection of cruises to popular destinations such as Riga, the High Coast and Ystad. ‘We are extremely pleased with this new initiative and to welcome newly refurbished M/S Birka Gotland to central Stockholm. Two of our successful customers, Viking Line and Gotlandsbolaget, are combining their specialised knowledge to launch a completely new and long-awaited initiative,’ says Johan Wallén, Chief Commercial Officer at Ports of Stockholm. Ports of Stockholm and Port of Riga sign MoU to apply for joint EU funding

A newly signed Memorandum of Understanding between Ports of Stockholm, the Freeport of Riga Authority and Riga Ropax Terminal is the driving force behind a joint application for EU funding to reduce the impact of port activities on the environment and climate in the areas surrounding the passenger terminals in the capital cities. The aim is to build a sustainable foundation for the future reintroduction of the important maritime transport route between the neighbouring countries and to ensure climate neutrality. At Stockholm City Hall on 14 June, representatives of Ports of Stockholm, the Freeport of Riga Authority and Riga Ropax Terminal signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate and jointly apply to the EU for funding for the project. The collaboration will lead to the further climate and environmental development of the passenger terminals located in the hearts of the respective cities, as well as build confidence in the future reintroduction of shipping services between the two capitals. “We are very much looking forward to working together with the Freeport of Riga Authority and Riga Ropax Terminal to tackle mutual challenges and explore development opportunities to minimise the environmental impact of cargo transport and passenger services at the Värtahamnen Port. Port terminals with central city locations are of major importance for the flow of both goods and passenger services. In the growing Stockholm, a well-functioning interface between city and port is extremely important,” explains Clara Lindblom, city council responsible for Ports of Stockholm. Värtahamnen Port is part of a holistically planned and complex environment, where the new Stockholm Royal Seaport buildings and the Värta Terminal combine to form a new waterfront and entrance to Stockholm. This creates added value for both residents and visitors, as well as better accessibility to the city. The Freeport of Riga Authority and Riga Ropax Terminal are part of a Memorandum of Understanding to improve connectivity between Riga and Stockholm and develop a brand new RoPax terminal in Riga. The collaboration is a significant milestone in the region's transportation sector and is a testament to the commitment of all three parties to drive innovation and growth and explore possibilities to improve environmental footprint. As stated by Ansis Zeltins, CEO of the Freeport of Riga Authority, “Riga and Stockholm have a very long-going history of maritime ties. The development of environmentally-friendly and future-oriented passenger infrastructure, as well as the improvement of connectivity within our port, is a key strategic goal for Freeport of Riga. The signing of this Memorandum emphasizes our joint effort to address existing and future environmental challenges, particularly in the scarce Baltic Sea region, while promoting the development of modern port infrastructure and building sustainable and 'green' passenger and freight services between our ports.” Jūlija Bērziņa, Chair of the Board, as well as Head of the Riga Ropax Terminal project also emphasized, “The team at the Riga Ropax Terminal is thrilled about the signing of this Memorandum and the future cooperation it represents. This is especially significant as we are currently working on the new passenger terminal project in Riga, with a goal of becoming operational and welcoming our first passengers in 2027. This step will enable us to collaborate more closely and leverage European funding to achieve our shared goals, and work together more effectively towards sustainable development, including the potential to expand maritime passenger transport.” Historically there has been a stable maritime daily connection between Stockholm and the Latvian capital city, Riga. Since 2010 services known as RoPax, carrying both passengers and goods cargo, sailed from the Värta Terminal in Stockholm. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic an average of just over 700,000 passengers used the sea-route between Stockholm and Riga each year. During the spring of 2020, the shipping company operating the Riga-Stockholm route decided to suspend services due to the severe drop in passenger numbers caused by the pandemic, which made the route unsustainable financially. The Memorandum of Understanding and the future joint project also aims to fulfil the EU "Fit for 55" goal to reduce net emissions of greenhouse gases by at least 55 percent by the year 2030.

New Stockholm Norvik Port – Eskilstuna Intermodal Terminal train link

January a new train service will operate five departures a week between Stockholm Norvik Port and the Eskilstuna Intermodal Terminal. This railway link will connect Stockholm Norvik to a larger railway network, offering customers more sustainable and cost-effective transport solutions. Train service operator, TX Logistik, will introduce a new train service in January 2023, with five departures each week between Stockholm Norvik Port and the Eskilstuna Intermodal Terminal. This means that Stockholm Norvik Port can offer a range of sustainable transport solutions, with closer connections to important central warehouse storage in Eskilstuna. “We are very happy about the new train connections between Stockholm Norvik Port and the Eskilstuna Intermodal Terminal. Expanding our operations improves the preconditions for transport to and from Stockholm, both for existing and for newly established companies in Eskilstuna and its surrounding area. It also demonstrates that railway transport is the solution for safe and environmentally friendly logistics,” says Fredrik Abrahamsson, Sales Manager at TX Logistik AB. Stockholm Norvik Port is a new RoRo and container port that has more destinations to choose between than any other port on the Swedish east coast. The short approach lanes and efficient transport connections make Stockholm Norvik an important logistics hub in the Greater Stockholm area. “The railway link between Stockholm Norvik Port and the Eskilstuna Intermodal Terminal is much sought after. Now we can offer customers new possibilities to transport both containers and trailers and lift over even more cargo from road transport to sea transport,” explains Claes Sörman from Eskilstuna Logistik och Etablering AB. Stockholm Norvik Port is a modern port with an infrastructure to meet market demands for increased frequency and capacity on the rail network. A 4,400 metre-long industrial railway branch line links Stockholm Norvik to Sweden’s national railway network. “It is really pleasing that our good collaboration has resulted in this new train service to Stockholm Norvik. Now we can offer both our container customers and our RoRo customers a transport solution that is both sustainable and cost-efficient. With this new train solution at the port, we have a first-class railway service,” states Nicklas Ebersson, marketing manager cargo at Ports of Stockholm. Starting in April, the Nordic railway company Cargonet, which operates goods trains in Sweden and Norway, will add services from the Eskilstuna Intermodal Terminal that will enable direct transport links to Oslo and the entire Nordic market. “We have seen a growing demand from customers for train transport between Norway and the Greater Stockholm area. There is currently a high flow of goods between the two regions, but the majority of the cargo is transported by road. With this new train link we can offer customers a wider range of sustainable transport solutions, providing much faster connections to Finland, the Baltic States and Norway,” states Carl Fredrik Karlsen, Cargonet commercial director. Stockholm Norvik Port opened in 2020 and is an important hub for sustainable intermodal transport. The container terminal at the port is run by Hutchison Ports, one of the world’s largest container terminal operators, with 53 ports in 27 countries. The RoRo terminal is operated by Ports of Stockholm.

Ports of Stockholm has twice the number of cruise ship calls and passengers

Stockholm remains a very popular cruise destination, despite the current turbulent times. When this cruise season ends, 205 cruise ships will have called at Ports of Stockholm, carrying twice as many passengers as the previous year. This year’s cruise season ends on 22 October, when the AIDADiva cruise ship departs from its city centre quay. In total 205 cruise ships, carrying 247,000 passengers, called at Ports of Stockholm during the 2022 season. This is twice as many as the previous year, both in terms of the number of cruise ship calls and passenger numbers. “Stockholm is very popular, and due to the current situation many cruise ships have chosen to stay extra days in Stockholm. The cruise passengers are very important to Stockholm financially, and generate over 1,000 jobs in the region,” says Ports of Stockholm CEO, Thomas Andersson. Despite the fact that these turbulent times impact the Baltic Sea region, Stockholm stands out and has retained its position as a sought after and very popular destination. This can also be seen by the number of maiden calls. This season, as many as 18 cruise ships called at Stockholm for the first time. An entirely new to Stockholm, traditional cruise line, Ambassador Cruise Line, also chose to make their maiden visit. “During the summer a brand new cruise quay also opened at Frihamnen Port. This has increased our flexibility and means we can welcome more cruise ships to make turnaround calls in Stockholm. We have also broken ground to install Sweden’s first onshore power connection facilities for cruise ships,” explains Stefan Scheja, Marketing Manager Ferries and Cruises at Ports of Stockholm. Ports of Stockholm works to promote sustainable port operations and shipping and this summer has begun construction of facilities to supply onshore power to cruise ships at the city centre Stadsgården quays. These cruise quays are the most centrally located and it is estimated that at least 45 percent of cruise ship calls will be able to connect to onshore power at the quayside here by 2023 and 2024, respectively. This is an environmental investment initiative together with three other Baltic Sea ports – Copenhagen/Malmö, Aarhus and Helsinki – which will result in significantly lower emissions of air pollutants in Stockholm and around the Baltic Sea.

Turkish Airlines unveils sustainability-themed aircraft, operates maiden flight to Stockholm

Turkish Airlines introduced a special design element adorned with leaves on its Airbus 321 type TC-JSU tail numbered aircraft, which was used for its environmentalist fuel operation. The global carrier operated its first flight with the new themed aircraft, flight TK1795, to Stockholm. In line with efforts to lead towards widespread use of environmentally friendly fuel, the flight used biofuel during its operation and was also undertaken with the zero-waste principle. Apart from providing information on the sustainability actions with the Green Class concept of this first flight, flag carrier also took new environmentally conscious actions for this flight. While kraft tissues, paper cups, wooden salt and pepper shakers were used on the flight, all passengers were served complimentary healthy green tea. Another special measure was the nature-friendly pillow covers and blankets which were produced with 100 percent recycled certificated threads in order to save on water. FSC certified wooden toys were gifted for our child guests. On the environmentally friendly aircraft, Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat stated: “As the national flag carrier of our country, our aircraft with its new design is now in the skies to underline the importance of sustainability for us. With the biofuel expression on our aircraft, we wish to emphasize the significance of using sustainable aviation fuel as it is one of the biggest hurdles of the aviation industry’s struggle against carbon emissions. Thus, we are supporting the biofuel manufacturing efforts and aim to increase our flights which use biofuel during their operations.”
