Top five ways to save on your summer holidays
While it may seem early to start thinking about saving money to spend on your summer holidays, now is the perfect to time to get ahead of the curve. Last year the average budget for spending money for UK holiday makers was less than £500 for the week. And interestingly, one in five people (17%) rarely or never stick to their planned budget, exceeding it by around £50 a day. As people look for ways to save money across all areas of life, Stacey Hope, travel expert at holiday home operator, Verdant Leisure, says the key to getting your summer holiday right is by thinking about it now: “When it comes to saving up for your holidays there is no such thing as too soon. The earlier you start putting money aside, the more money you will have to spend while away, meaning you don’t have to cut back on days out.” If you're looking to keep a tight plan when it comes to money this summer, Verdant Leisure have teamed up with Laura Turner, personal finance expert at The Thrifty Londoner to bring you five money-savvy tips you need to try, ahead of the summer holidays. 1) Set up money pots “Setting up an easy access savings account or savings ‘pot’ is the best way to save money ahead of your summer holidays. You can do this either in cash or within a dedicated challenger bank or budgeting app (Monzo, Starling and Chase are all great). Slowly add to these pots over the winter and the spring, and by summer you will have a stash of money to use ahead of the holidays. “Some online banking providers such as Monzo have a feature which allows you to round up all your transactions, and the extra money is put into a savings pot. Try this in the lead up to your holiday and see how much extra money you have saved up to take away with you.” 2) Utilise cashback sites “In the lead up to your holiday there will be various occasions in which you have to refer to online shopping, be that for holiday essentials or just general shopping. When doing so, make use of cashback apps and websites such as Top Cashback, to get money back on your everyday spending. “It allows you to earn a small percentage of money back on purchases made through the site, that can be withdrawn once you earn a certain amount. Once summer comes, you'll have accumulated some extra money that you can withdraw to use on your holidays.” 3) Sell and shop second-hand “Buying clothes for summer holidays can often work out to be the most expensive element of planning to go away. Online re-sale sites such as Vinted, e-Bay and Depop are great options for both making extra money and buying summer clothes. “If you are wanting to make some extra cash to splurge on new outfits, try selling your unwanted clothes and shoes on a re-sale site. You can either put the money aside for holiday spending money or use the money that you make to buy your summer clothes. Purchasing your summer clothes out of season and second-hand can save you a fortune.” 4) Shop the sales “Believe it or not, you can find summer clothing at a snip of the original RRP by shopping for sale items during the winter. Check out the clearance sections of your favourite retailers to get a bargain on swimwear and other summer essentials such as shorts and sunglasses. Toiletries and sun cream also tend to keep for a few months, so buy these before the prices rise in holiday season. “What’s great about shopping in the sales is you're not going pick up the trending piece of the season, so you don’t have to worry about matching with every other tourist on your holidays.” 5) Book everything in advance "If you're taking a flight, train, or hiring a car, see if you can book early to get the best deal possible. It is also helpful to book any excursions or activities you plan to do in advance, not only so you can ensure a place before they get fully booked, but so the payments are out of the way before the actual holiday. “Similarly, booking restaurants in advance will ensure you are dining somewhere with a menu you like and prices you can afford, making it easier to budget your spending money once you are abroad.” Stacey Hope, travel expert at Verdant Leisure commented: “Everyone deserves to get away and unwind from the stress of everyday life, but summer holidays can often become expensive once you begin to consider new clothes, insurance, booking activities and so much more. “To stop the holiday from becoming just as stressful as the place you're trying to escape from, there are some great ways to make savings well in advance of you holiday. And we love that you can start ahead of summer, when you wouldn’t always think to start planning.”
Why you should book your holiday on a Wednesday and four other ways to keep holiday costs down
New research from independent financial broker Norton Finance finds searches for ‘cheap holidays’ peaked in the past week, as consumers look at changing how they travel in order to save money. Norton Finance’s research has uncovered five tips that readers can use when booking holidays that could potentially save them hundreds of pounds without needing to compromise on where they go or what they do. Follow these lesser-known travel tips from Norton Finance to keep costs down on this year’s holidays. Book on a Wednesday Holiday prices often fluctuate throughout the week, so it’s best to avoid booking on weekends. The priciest day to book a holiday is a Saturday¹, you can save 5% by opting to book on a Wednesday instead. This might not sound like much but would save you £213 on the average price of a 4-star, all-inclusive 7-day holiday to Spain in August for a family of 4.² Travel on a Tuesday Research carried out by Norton Finance finds early/ or mid-week flights (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) have the cheapest price tag. Flying on these days saves an average of 12%³, but savings can often be much higher. By the same token, flight prices also differ depending on the time of day. How you pay When it comes to financing your holiday, Paul Stringer, director of Norton Finance says, ‘If you’re committed to a more expensive holiday and you’re thinking about how to pay for it, consider applying for a holiday loan rather than using Buy-Now-Pay-Later schemes or credit cards. Loans generally have lower interest rates than credit cards, making them more cost effective for large purchases. With BNPL, there’s often no protection on purchases, and many users get caught out by late payments. Discussing a loan with an advisor will help assess what you can afford to borrow and prepare you with a payment plan to avoid late fees.’ Choose All-in All-inclusive and full board holidays make it easier to stick to a budget as there are little or no extra costs. Be sure to check the terms and conditions as what’s included as deals can vary between hotels. The average dinner for two in Spain is €44², so opting for an all-inclusive package can eliminate these additional costs. Thrifty holidaymakers prefer packages Booking independently often allows more flexibility, but packages tend to work out cheaper overall once extras like airport transfers and insurance are factored in. Packages also tend to offer more protection if things go wrong. A study by Which? found that prices can increase as much as 76%4 when booking separately instead of a package deal. Paul Stringer, director at Norton Finance, says ‘With 60% of Brits⁵ planning a foreign holiday in 2023, the peak in searches for ‘cheap holidays’ reflect the public’s desire to make travel plans in 2023 without causing financial difficulty.’

This article was originally published as a blog post by AltexSoft. It is published here with permission. Ranked as the fourth most popular mode of transportation, car rental attracts a growing number of users each year. Since car rental is an integral part of the travel industry, it clearly makes sense to tie it into your travel or hospitality service. Car rental providers and connectivity types they offer Car rental industry trends As noted by Neil Abrams, veteran car rental analyst, the car rental industry is currently in a transformative stage. So, companies keep their eyes open for new ways of doing business. They grow revenue offering car-sharing services, go green to support environmentally aware customers, and expand their services beyond traditional rentals. Carsharing: car rental by the hour A point-to-point car-sharing service is profitable for suppliers and convenient for users. Car2Go is an example of a carsharing service with flexible credits and rental rates. Users must download an app and validate their license there. Then they can hop in any available car and later leave it in any legally approved spot. To manage short term car bookings, you can leverage the Car2Go API. It’ll provide you with up-to-date information on: available vehicles parking places local gas stations. Green vehicles: eco-friendly suppliers As environmental awareness keeps conquering minds, it finds its reflection in the car rental industry too. Eco-friendly vehicle suppliers have a chance to stand out and instantly win their target customers. Green Motion, car and van rental eco brand, offers green cars for hire. By means of their API, the Green Motion management system connects to outsider systems to provide the following functionalities: accessing charging stations keeping a record of charging points recovering recharging transactions integrating with parking tickets systems facilitating recharge payment by text message integrating with carsharing systems: reservation of charging stations, identification of the connected vehicle. Pushing car rentals further: optional tours and vehicle sales Aiming at diversity and better customer service, car rental providers extend their sphere of operation. For instance, Hertz paired with travel platform PlacePass to integrate curated in-destination experiences along with car hire services. So now when booking a rental car through Hertz, customers can also sign up for excursions. In its turn, Avis approach car sales. They create greater buyer confidence in the purchase of a rental vehicle offering low-mileage, competitively-priced cars that are certified.

Zero commission on Hyatt’s new programme targeting corporate travellers
Hyatt Hotels has announced Hyatt Leverage, a global business travel programme that offers special rates to qualifying SMEs at participating properties worldwide. With a goal of attracting corporate travellers by making business trips less stressful and more successful, Hyatt Hotels launched a new global programme for small to mid-sized businesses called Hyatt Leverage. Frequent business travellers and companies alike will applaud the new programme as it offers discounts of up to 15% off the standard rate at participating Hyatt Hotels, as well as 5% off at Oasis home rentals, the company’s serviced home rental accommodations. “With Hyatt Leverage, we are adding value for small and mid-sized businesses by providing a tool that makes booking travel more seamless.” - Gus Vonderheide, Hyatt Hotels “With Hyatt Leverage, we are adding value for small and mid-sized businesses by providing a tool that makes booking travel more seamless,” said Gus Vonderheide, vice president of global sales at Hyatt. “Hyatt Leverage also includes resources that enable businesses to view reservations and track room expenses all in one easy solution.” The said tool is a dashboard that allows administrators to view traveller information, reservations and room expenses, as well as track total bookings and room spend. This will not only please thrifty bosses but administrators as well, as it compiles the travel specifics in one convenient platform. In addition, email templates are provided so they can easily share information. Ideally designed for companies with less than a thousand employees, the programme’s target is to capture the SME market by bringing convenience, and of course, by offering a nice discount. How it works To enter the Hyatt Leverage programme, business admins may register on its official webpage. After registration, they will receive a unique code, which then can be shared through the travelling employees. This will allow them to unlock the discounts when booking through Hyatt.com or Hyatt Reservation Centers. As reservations are booked, program administrators are able to view employee travel and track their room spend in a comprehensive Hyatt Leverage dashboard. It will also give the ability for World of Hyatt loyalty members at participating companies to earn points on stays booked through Hyatt Leverage. Although the new initiative bypasses the commission component for travel agencies, Vonderheide noted that it is not trying to drive business away from them, but simply targeting SMEs (including OTAs) that will rely on the tool. He said: "All we're trying to do is capture them and say we can make this easy for you and provide a nice discount." As a proof of maintaining its relationship with them, Hyatt earlier this year launched a programme for luxury agents, which offers extra perks for top sellers. Furthermore, the company hasn’t made any plans of cutting commission on group bookings, unlike its contemporaries Marriott, Hilton and IHG.
