As Singapore prepares for its inaugural Formula One (F1) Sprint this weekend, the city-state is poised to leverage its extensive experience in hosting the prestigious event. Dr Guy Llewelyn, Academic Director of APAC and Assistant Professor at EHL Hospitality Business School, emphasises the importance of Singapore's strategic evolution from merely hosting a sporting event to creating a citywide festival atmosphere.

Singapore's unique offering includes a combination of an F1 circuit, internationally branded hotels, fine dining, nightlife, and entertainment venues, all conveniently located within walking distance. Dr Llewelyn notes that whilst being the first night race was initially a significant draw, the focus has shifted to execution. "Singapore has accumulated almost two decades of operational expertise, stakeholder coordination, and international brand recognition around the event," he states.

The introduction of the F1 Sprint is expected to influence hotel demand, with potential increases in Thursday arrivals, longer minimum stays, and elevated room rates on Friday and Saturday. However, the challenge remains in transforming racegoers into longer-stay visitors. Dr Llewelyn suggests that the goal should be to shift perceptions from "I'm travelling to watch Formula One" to "I'm taking a holiday that includes Formula One."

To maintain its competitive edge, Singapore must continue evolving beyond the race itself. Dr Llewelyn advises positioning Singapore as the centre of a broader Southeast Asian F1 travel ecosystem. The long-term challenge is not just attracting visitors once but ensuring they return year after year, even as new races emerge globally.
