South Western Railway (SWR) has introduced its first-ever May Rail Sale, offering 40,000 discounted tickets to over 100 destinations across the South West. Running from 8 to 18 May, the sale aims to cater to the growing trend of Brits choosing affordable UK holidays over costly overseas getaways, particularly during the May half-term.
Tickets, available for travel between 23 and 31 May, start at just £6 each way. This initiative follows SWR's research indicating that 34% of respondents prefer UK trips due to lower costs, with 33% citing reduced travel time and 29% appreciating the ease of planning. Additionally, 26% of those surveyed are considering replacing one overseas holiday with multiple UK trips.
Popular destinations in the sale include coastal spots like Bournemouth, Poole, and Weymouth, priced at £12 each way, and historical sites such as Winchester and Salisbury, available from £9. The sale also covers journeys to London, offering access to attractions like the London Eye and The Shard.
Families, in particular, are drawn to these affordable and easy-to-plan UK breaks, with 47% prioritising cost-effective options. SWR's Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, Matthew Winnie, stated, “Our first-ever big May Rail Sale is all about helping customers enjoy great value days out and short breaks across the SWR network during the half-term and May bank holiday period.”
The sale not only offers discounted travel but also includes SWR Rewards, providing further savings on attractions and dining, enhancing the overall experience for travellers
