Travel guidelines that you need to check as Abu Dhabi opens for tourism

Following the successful implementation of stringent precautionary measures to curb the spread of Covid-19, Abu Dhabi has started welcoming international tourists again, from today.

The emirate’s media office has issued an updated advisory on quarantine and travel procedures required for entry into the emirate. This is what you need to know.

Is a negative PCR test result required for international travellers to enter the capital?

Yes. Travellers to Abu Dhabi from the ‘green’ list of countries will be required to present a valid negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 96 hours prior to their scheduled departure. Upon entering the emirate, they will need to take a second test and self-isolate until the results of this test are received.

Will international travellers need to undergo quarantine upon arrival in Abu Dhabi?

If the results of both PCR tests submitted by international travellers — one taken 96 hours before departure and one on arrival — are negative, they will no longer need to quarantine for 10 days after entering Abu Dhabi.

Will travellers be required to take PCR tests on Day 4 and Day 8?

No, the new guidelines state that all travellers will only need to take a PCR test on Day 6 for those staying for six days or more, and on Day 12 for those staying for 12 days or more.

What are the PCR test requirements for travellers coming from countries that are not on the ‘green’ list?

  • Visitors entering Abu Dhabi from all countries that are not on the ‘green’ list will need to present a negative PCR test result ahead of travelling to Abu Dhabi.
  • Depending on the country of origin, the test must be carried out between 48, 72 or 96 hours ahead of your flight departure time. Visitors are advised to check the travel requirements for their country in advance.
  • Upon arrival in Abu Dhabi, medical authorities will conduct another PCR test after passengers have disembarked from their flight.

What are the quarantine procedures for such passengers?

After disembarking, passengers from countries not on the ‘green’ list will need to register under the quarantine system. They will be provided with an electronic wristband, which will need to be worn throughout the quarantine period which will last 10 days.

Quarantine locations will be determined by health authorities in Abu Dhabi. This may be a hotel, accommodation provided by medical authorities, or your own home.

What are the PCR test requirements for those outside the ‘green’ list once inside the capital?

The same PCR test requirements will apply once inside the capital. Travellers will need to take a PCR test on the sixth day after arrival into Abu Dhabi. If staying for 12 days or more, another PCR test will need to be done on day 12.

How long will the wristband need to be worn for?

Passengers will need to wear the wristband for the duration of the quarantine period. After they present a negative PCR test result 10 days after arrival into Abu Dhabi, they can have the electronic wristband removed by medical authorities.

Is anyone exempt from the PCR tests?

Yes. Children under 12 years and people with severe and moderate disabilities are exempt from COVID-19 PCR testing before departure.
