The World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAAA) has called for airlines to enhance transparency and collaboration regarding airline-imposed surcharges amidst ongoing geopolitical and economic volatility. The organisation highlights that inconsistent surcharge labels and unclear refund policies are causing confusion for travellers and adding pressure on travel agencies, which are increasingly relied upon for support.
Airline-imposed surcharges, often labelled as YQ or YR on tickets, were initially linked to fuel-cost recovery but have since expanded to include broader carrier-imposed charges. These surcharges can appear under various labels, such as "fuel surcharge" or "international surcharge," leading to consumer confusion over the true cost of travel.
WTAAA Executive Director Otto de Vries emphasised the need for clarity, stating, "At a time of global uncertainty, travellers need clarity and confidence when they book. Travel advisers are often the ones explaining complex charges and assisting clients when plans are disrupted."
The WTAAA is advocating for several measures to improve transparency and consumer confidence:
- Clear and consistent disclosure of surcharges throughout the booking process.
- Incorporation of surcharges into base fares to eliminate fragmented pricing.
- Fair and prompt refund treatment when flights are cancelled.
- Reasonable notice of surcharge changes.
- Industry dialogue on simpler, more transparent fare presentation.
The WTAAA, representing travel agencies from 57 countries, stresses that whilst no single solution fits all markets, the need for honesty and clarity in travel cost presentation is universal
