The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is set to captivate international audiences with the 2026 Nakhon Phanom Illuminated Boat Procession, a hallmark of Thailand's Mekong traditions. Scheduled from 16 to 27 October, the event will unfold around Nakhon Phanom Provincial Hall and along the Mekong riverfront, culminating on 26 October to mark the end of Buddhist Lent.
The festival is a vibrant blend of Buddhist traditions, local craftsmanship, cultural performances, regional cuisine, and community products. TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool emphasised the event's significance, stating, "The Nakhon Phanom Illuminated Boat Procession is a powerful expression of faith, craftsmanship, and Mekong community identity."
The main event on 26 October will feature 12 illuminated boats, each representing a district of Nakhon Phanom, competing for a royal trophy. The procession will begin at 18:00, with boats setting off at 20-minute intervals. A showcase by Nakhon Phanom University will join at 20:00, with the final entry at 22:20.
Visitors can also engage in traditional rituals, such as floating banana-stalk boats and lamps on the Mekong, from 16 to 26 October. The festival's spiritual essence is further highlighted through merit-making, almsgiving, and ritual offerings.
The programme includes longboat races, local markets, and nightly Molam performances, connecting the illuminated boat tradition with Nakhon Phanom's broader Mekong identity. This initiative is part of TAT's strategy to elevate signature events like the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession and Sakon Nakhon Christmas Star Parade, showcasing Thailand's living culture and community creativity.
