Where sustainability lies at the heart of operations
Sun Siyam has long prioritised sustainability at the heart of its operations, focusing on coral propagation, seagrass conservation, and the development of local talent through community empowerment programs under the Sun Siyam Cares umbrella.
The Group also promotes green supply chains, reduces single-use plastics, and invests in education and training to prepare future hospitality leaders in the Maldives.
These initiatives demonstrate Sun Siyam’s belief that responsible tourism is not just an aspiration but a necessity for the future of island nations.
Growth and transformation
Through its Sun Siyam Cares programme, the Group has developed a portfolio of transformative projects designed to preserve the natural environment and uplift local communities:
- Marine Conservation – Establishing coral nurseries at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, participating in protecting manta ray hotspots, and engaging guests in citizen science activities;
- Seagrass Protection & Composting – Promoting seagrass preservation to maintain marine biodiversity and turning organic waste into nutrient-rich compost for resort gardens;
- Spice Garden & Sustainable Agriculture – Creating self-sufficient green spaces where fresh herbs and spices are cultivated for resort kitchens while educating guests and schoolchildren on sustainable farming;
- Plastic Recycling & Upcycling – Through the Sun Siyam Upcycle Center in Siyam World, more than 800 kilograms of plastic have been recycled and repurposed, significantly reducing waste and contributing to a circular economy;
- Community Engagement & Education – Providing scholarships, school supplies, and vocational training opportunities for local youth, ensuring long-term socio-economic growth; and
- Wellness & Environmental Awareness – Organizing staff well-being activities, community clean-ups, and environmental education workshops to foster a culture of sustainability.
These initiatives collectively embody Sun Siyam’s holistic vision of sustainability, safeguarding fragile ecosystems while empowering individuals to build resilient futures.
