The UTMB World Series has announced the addition of two new events to its 2027 calendar: the Hiroshima Ultra-Trail by UTMB in Japan and the Ultra Trail Chattanooga by UTMB in the United States. These events aim to offer unique trail running experiences, deeply rooted in the local culture and landscapes of their respective regions.
With a growing number of trail runners—53,000 in the US and over 30,000 in Japan—the UTMB World Series is tapping into vibrant communities. From 2025 to 2026, the number of runners with a UTMB Index increased by 26% in the US and 11% in Japan. Florian Lamblin, executive director of UTMB International, highlighted the events' focus on authentic experiences: “Both events have a strong identity, deeply rooted in their region.”
In Hiroshima, the event will take place from 9 to 11 April 2027, offering three race distances: 100K, 50K, and 20K. Participants will traverse routes that include UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Itsukushima Shrine. Race director Mitsukuni Bunyu emphasised the cultural immersion: “More than just a race, Hiroshima Ultra-Trail by UTMB will be an experience that stays with you long after you cross the finish line.”
Meanwhile, Ultra Trail Chattanooga, scheduled for 4 to 6 June 2027, will feature similar race distances, connecting Chattanooga with the Appalachian Mountains. Ginny Smith, race director, noted the community's role: “Ultra Trail Chattanooga is a true local effort driven by volunteers, nonprofit partners, land managers, businesses, and a community that always shows up.”
Both events are committed to environmental sustainability and community involvement, with initiatives like trail maintenance and local produce promotion. Priority registrations for UTMB Index holders open on 18 August, with general registrations following on 20 August
