The latest report by High Speed Training reveals that UK hotels, B&Bs, and guesthouses have achieved an impressive average food hygiene rating of 4.79 out of 5. This analysis, based on Food Standards Agency data, highlights that 84.9% of these establishments received the top score of 5, with a total of 95.53% scoring either a 4 or 5.

This marks a slight improvement from the previous year's average of 4.78, showcasing the sector's commitment to maintaining high standards. In comparison, restaurants, cafés, and canteens scored an average of 4.59, with 10.56% receiving a rating of 3 or below, significantly higher than the 4.47% in the hotel sector.

Only 0.07% of hotels, B&Bs, and guesthouses received a zero rating, a stark contrast to the 0.24% of zero-rated restaurants. The South West emerged as the top-scoring region with an average rating of 4.69, whilst London had the lowest at 4.39.

Dr Richard Anderson, Director of Learning at High Speed Training, emphasised the importance of these ratings: “Food safety and robust hygiene practices should be of paramount importance to food businesses, and to the customers who use them. Over the last 5 years, we have seen trends broadly improve across the whole of the UK, which is a really positive sign.”

The report, now in its fifth year, shows a consistent rise in average ratings across the UK, with only Northern Ireland experiencing a slight drop. The findings underscore the significance of food hygiene training and management practices in attracting and retaining customers
