Agoda has revealed that local festivals across Asia are significantly increasing accommodation interest, offering new opportunities for travel beyond traditional tourist hotspots. The digital travel platform's data shows a remarkable surge in searches for destinations like Nagaoka City in Japan during its Grand Fireworks Festival, with a 50-fold increase in interest compared to non-festival periods.
The trend underscores a shift towards experience-led travel, with Agoda's 2026 Travel Outlook Report indicating that 25% of Asian travellers prioritise cultural exploration. Upcoming events such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, South Korea's Chuseok, and the MassKara Festival in the Philippines are expected to attract travellers seeking authentic cultural experiences.
Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President of Supply at Agoda, noted, "Travel planning is increasingly being shaped by the experience travellers want to have, and social media is further amplifying awareness of cultural moments and local festivals to a much wider audience."
Agoda's Mega Sale campaign, running from 13 to 31 August, aims to capitalise on this trend by offering participating accommodation partners increased visibility and discounts of up to 70%. The campaign is structured in phases, beginning with VIP Priority Access and culminating in a Flash Sale on 19 August.
Agoda advises accommodation partners to prepare for festival-led demand by aligning inventory with event dates, enhancing property listings with local travel information, and tailoring experiences to different markets. This approach aims to transform festival interest into tangible booking opportunities, supporting both local economies and the travel industry
