Banyan Tree Holdings Limited has officially launched its first European resort, Mamula Island by Banyan Tree, located at the entrance of Montenegro's UNESCO-listed Bay of Kotor.
The resort, housed in a restored 19th-century fortress, marks a significant expansion for the global hospitality company, known for its luxury offerings.
Mamula Island, now a 32-room sanctuary, features the award-winning Banyan Tree Spa and offers a range of experiences including destination-led dining, cultural programming, and nature-based activities. The restoration of Fort Mamula, originally built in the 1850s, was led by developer Samih Sawiris in collaboration with Lisbon-based MCM Architecture & Design, Montenegrin conservation studio Projektor, and local heritage authorities.
Guests can reach the island via private boat or helicopter, with all rooms providing views of the Adriatic Sea. The resort's design incorporates local craftsmanship and mid-century influences, with interiors featuring natural stone, aged brass, and organic textiles. Dining options include Parasol, Kamena Restaurant, and Celeste, each offering unique culinary experiences inspired by local produce and coastal traditions.
The Banyan Tree Spa, located within the historic fortress tower, offers treatments using local plants and oils, alongside traditional therapies. Guests can also explore the island's coastline and participate in curated experiences such as sunrise swims and local food tours.
Mamula Island by Banyan Tree also hosts cultural events, including an Artists-in-Residence programme and the Operosa Music Festival, enhancing its appeal as a creative retreat. The resort is available for private events, offering a unique setting for weddings and retreats
