Dubai’s tourism and hospitality sectors are set to receive a significant infrastructure boost with the opening of a new direct bridge connecting Sheikh Zayed Road to Dubai Harbour. The project, which is more than 90% complete and scheduled to open in phases during June and July 2026, is expected to dramatically improve access to one of Dubai’s most important waterfront tourism and residential destinations.

The 1,500-metre bridge, being developed by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in partnership with Shamal Holding, will provide a direct entry and exit route between Sheikh Zayed Road and Dubai Harbour. Once operational, travel time to the district will fall from approximately 12 minutes to just three minutes, cutting journey times by 75%. The bridge will feature two lanes in each direction and handle up to 6,000 vehicles per hour.

Why It Matters for Hospitality

For Dubai’s hospitality industry, improved accessibility is becoming as important as hotel supply. Dubai Harbour has emerged as a major tourism district, strategically located between the globally recognised destinations of Palm Jumeirah and Bluewaters Island. The area is home to the Middle East’s largest yacht marina, a cruise terminal, luxury residences, waterfront dining outlets and leisure attractions.

The enhanced road connectivity is expected to benefit luxury hotels, serviced apartments, restaurants, event venues and cruise operators operating within and around Dubai Harbour. Faster access from key business districts, Dubai International Airport and other tourism zones could help strengthen visitor flows while improving the guest experience.

Industry observers note that transport accessibility often plays a critical role in destination competitiveness. By reducing congestion and shortening transfer times, the bridge is likely to support higher visitation levels and encourage greater utilisation of hospitality assets in the harbour district.

Supporting Dubai’s Tourism Growth Strategy

The project aligns with Dubai’s broader strategy of investing in infrastructure to support tourism and urban expansion. According to the RTA, the bridge forms part of efforts to develop an integrated road network capable of supporting future economic and tourism growth while improving mobility across key development zones.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said the development reflects Dubai’s commitment to building infrastructure that keeps pace with rapid urban and economic growth. He added that the project would provide “sustainable traffic solutions” and improve access to one of the emirate’s leading waterfront tourism destinations.

The bridge also highlights the growing role of public-private partnerships in Dubai’s infrastructure development. Shamal Holding, the master developer behind Dubai Harbour, has partnered with the RTA on the project, demonstrating how transport investments are increasingly being integrated into destination development strategies.

A Catalyst for Future Development

Dubai Harbour is currently undergoing a major expansion phase. According to project details released by the RTA, the district is seeing the development of 24 residential towers comprising around 7,500 apartments, further increasing the area's importance as a mixed-use tourism and lifestyle destination.

For hospitality investors and operators, the new bridge is likely to enhance the attractiveness of the district by improving accessibility for guests, residents, cruise passengers and event attendees. Better road connectivity could also support future hotel developments and increase the appeal of Dubai Harbour as a venue for international conferences, yacht events and leisure tourism.
