Emirates has achieved a significant milestone in its extensive retrofit programme by completing the first-ever reconfiguration of a two-class A380 aircraft. The newly refurbished aircraft, A6-EUX, has commenced operations between Dubai and Birmingham, showcasing Emirates' latest cabin products across three classes: 76 Business Class seats, 56 Premium Economy seats, and 437 Economy Class seats. This marks the beginning of a series of renovations for 15 two-class A380 aircraft in Emirates' fleet.

The retrofit, managed entirely in-house by Emirates Engineering in Dubai, has already seen 95 aircraft, including 42 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s, undergo transformation. Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, emphasised the programme's focus on enhancing customer experience, stating, "Our retrofit programme has raised the bar at every step in terms of complexity, scale, and detailed craftsmanship."

The introduction of the award-winning Premium Economy cabin to the A380's upper deck features spacious leather seats in a 2-3-2 configuration, complete with full leg and footrests, adjustable headrests, and a 13.3-inch personal entertainment screen. The aircraft's interiors have been refreshed with modern colour palettes, Ghaf tree motifs, and premium wood finishes.

The retrofit of A6-EUX involved extensive modifications, including the removal of 120 Economy Class seats to accommodate the new seating arrangement. The process required around 35,000 man-hours and over 2,500 different parts. Future retrofits are expected to be completed in 30 days, with all 15 aircraft set to be refurbished by the end of 2026.

Emirates' retrofit programme, initially announced in 2021, has expanded from 120 to 219 aircraft, driven by positive customer feedback. The airline also focuses on sustainability, repurposing materials from retrofitted aircraft into products like backpacks for children
