Istanbul offers the most affordable dining out experience in Europe in 2021, a new study reveals. Theย studyย carried out byย Maxima Kitchen Equipment, examined theย top cities in Europeย to discover theย cheapest andย most expensiveย places to dine outย using dataย on the cost of livingย fromย Expatistanย andย
The analysis was based on the price of a meal at an inexpensive restaurant, the price of a meal at a mid-range restaurant, the cost ofย a lunchtime meal, the cost of a pub dinner and the price of a three-course meal at an Italian restaurant.
Theย studyย reported thatย Turkeyโs largest cityย Istanbul, is the most affordable city to eat at a restaurant with the average cost of โฌ17.42 for two people to dine out.ย The Turkish city offers many low-budget dining experiences, topping the lists for mid-range meal, lunchtime meal and pub dinnerย to make itย the cheapestย city in Europe.
St. Petersburg is the second cheapest city to dine out in Europe with an average cost for two totalling โฌ21.60. The Russian city provides a variety of low-priced restaurant options including pubs. However, the average price to eat at a mid-range restaurant is โฌ30.10, โฌ10.90 more than Istanbul, making it the second cheapest city in Europe.
Budapestย placed as the third cheapest city to eat out in Europe, costing only โฌ22.50 for two people. The Hungarian capitalย alsoย toppedย the list as the cheapest place to eat a three-course meal at an Italian restaurant with an average cost of โฌ31 for two people.

In contrast, Oslo topped the list as the most expensive European city to enjoy a meal out with an average cost of โฌ66.48 for two, almost 400% higher than the average cost in Istanbul. Norway hosts two of the top three most expensive cities (Osloย and Bergen)ย for dining outย which could be attributed to the countryโs high monthly net salary average of โฌ3,068 compared toย Turkeyโs average monthly net salary of โฌ346.
Copenhagen ranks as the second most expensive city in Europe for eating at a restaurant with an average of โฌ63 for two. It has the second highest cost for a meal at a mid-range meal, costing โฌ94.10, only โฌ4.80 less than Oslo. Londonย comes in at fifth withย a total average cost to dine out for two atย โฌ53.82. Otherย topย UK citiesย include Manchester which ranks as the 14thย most expensive city in Europe with an average cost ofย โฌ45.22 for two, withย the Scottish capital cityย Edinburgh following closely behindย as the 18th most expensive city at โฌ42.80 for two people eating out.
Commenting on the study, a spokesperson fromย Maxima said:ย โSince the amber list has been scrapped, holiday makers are more eager than ever to start booking trips to Europe.ย Dining out and local cuisine are undeniably important factors when selecting a destination, so this research provides good guidance on whichย cityย is most cost-effective for food fansโ.
The analysis was conducted by Maxima Kitchen Equipment, which has more than 40 years of experience in the supply and maintenance of professional kitchen equipment.
