A recent survey commissioned by Airbnb highlights that Malaysians are committed to being respectful guests when travelling. Conducted by YouGov, the survey found that 85% of Malaysians consider being a respectful homestay guest as highly important, with nine in ten describing themselves as good or excellent guests. This behaviour is deeply rooted in Malaysian values of respect and consideration.
The survey, which involved 1,000 Malaysians who stayed in homestays within the past year, revealed that 66% of respondents go the extra mile by washing dishes, taking out rubbish, and leaving thank-you notes for hosts. Additionally, during durian season, nearly 80% of Malaysians would either ask for permission, eat outside, or avoid bringing durian into shared spaces to prevent inconvenience.
Airbnb's internal data supports these findings, showing that over 97% of stays in Malaysia from March 2025 to March 2026 were completed without complaints. Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb's Country Head for Southeast Asia and India, noted that "small acts of consideration and kindness" are natural traits for many Malaysians, enhancing the travel experience for both guests and hosts.
To further promote respectful travel, Airbnb has launched the Good Guest Guide, offering tips for enjoying Malaysia whilst being a considerate guest. This initiative aims to ensure that the benefits of travel extend to the communities that welcome visitors, fostering a culture of respectful travel
