Radisson Hotel Group has launched Africa’s first Verified Net Zero hotel, Radisson Safari Hoedspruit, in South Africa’s Limpopo province. The launch marks a milestone for sustainable hospitality in Africa. It also supports the Group’s goal of operating 100 Verified Net Zero hotels by 2030. The hotel uses renewable electricity, electrified operations and lower-carbon guest experiences to reduce its environmental impact.
Located near Kruger National Park and Blyde River Canyon, the 138-room hotel operates on 100% renewable energy. It uses on-site solar power and renewable electricity from the national grid. Electric kitchen equipment and vehicles also help reduce fossil fuel use.
The hotel also focuses on waste management and water conservation. It recycles all wastewater and works with local companies to separate and recycle waste. Composting and worm farming support its zero-waste ambition. Guests can also help reduce environmental impact by reusing towels and choosing flexible housekeeping options.
The hotel uses carbon-labelled menus developed with food sustainability platform Klimato. These help guests make informed dining choices and guide the culinary team towards lower-carbon options. The hotel also promotes responsible sourcing. For example, it turns used coffee bags into reusable shopping bags.
Tim Cordon, Chief Operating Officer for the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia Pacific at Radisson, highlighted the importance of introducing the Verified Net Zero programme in Africa. He noted the significance of the natural surroundings to guests. Inge Huijbrechts, Chief Sustainability & Security Officer, emphasised the hotel’s comprehensive approach to reducing its carbon footprint, verified by TÜV Rheinland.
Radisson Safari Hoedspruit supports the Group’s wider sustainability goals. It also demonstrates how existing hotels can transition towards net zero while maintaining guest comfort and service.
