Scottish Government urged to expand hospitality support

The Scottish Government is being urged to use an additional £900 million in funding, confirmed through Barnett consequentials following the Spring Forecast, to expand support for the hospitality sector. Leon Thompson, Executive Director of UKHospitality Scotland, highlighted the need to remove the current £110,000 cap on business rates support, which excludes many businesses, particularly those operating multiple sites and employing large numbers of people.

Thompson emphasised that the windfall should be used to extend support to all businesses, including those paying intermediate and higher property rates. This move, he argued, would help alleviate the cost burden on the sector, which is a significant contributor to the Scottish economy.

UKHospitality Scotland represents over 8,000 venues across the country, contributing £7.6 billion annually to the economy and employing 290,000 people. The organisation advocates for a thriving hospitality environment and provides expert insight and guidance on key industry issues. The additional funding presents an opportunity for the Scottish Government to address the challenges faced by the sector and ensure its continued contribution to the economy
