Fiji Airways Sets Sights on Expanding Australian and US Networks
Fiji Airways, the national airline of Fiji, is riding high on the jet stream of success after a record-breaking year in 2023. With over 2 million passengers on board—a remarkable 57% increase from the previous year—the airline is now setting its sights on further expanding its reach, particularly into its largest market, Australia. The carrier’s ambitions were hinted at last year with talks of new flights to several additional Australian destinations and key cities in Asia and the Pacific. Now, the plans are taking shape, with CEO Andre Viljoen revealing potential new routes to underserved markets that align perfectly with Fiji Airways’ network, including Cairns and Newcastle in Australia and extending as far as Port Moresby and Pago Pago. At the MTA National Conference in Nadi, Tourism Fiji CEO Brent Hill confirmed the airline’s exploration of a new direct route to Cairns, signalling a strategic move to strengthen its Australian network. But the airline’s vision doesn’t stop there. Viljoen expressed a desire to enhance its North American presence, with hopes pinned on an open skies agreement to unlock new opportunities in cities like Dallas/Ft. Worth and Seattle. With a significant portion of its business stemming from Australia and New Zealand and a notable amount of traffic connecting onwards—particularly to North America—Viljoen sees immense potential in carrying connecting passengers through Fiji, especially from markets currently without direct service. In line with its growth strategy, Fiji Airways is also looking ahead to fleet renewal, planning to retire its A330-200s and a leased A330-300 soon. The airline’s four new A350 aircraft fleets have been well-received, especially in long-haul sectors and routes where competitors operate smaller aircraft. The airline’s commitment to enhancing the passenger experience was further demonstrated by its recent elevation to full-member status within the oneworld alliance, just weeks after celebrating a record year. Additionally, Fiji Airways has introduced its Chef’s Table innovation, offering a unique Fijian fine-dining experience at the Premier Lounge in Nadi International Airport, further cementing its reputation as an innovator in the skies. As Fiji Airways continues to soar to new heights, it remains dedicated to connecting the world to the beauty of Fiji while also bringing the essence of Fijian hospitality to every journey.

On Friday, 14 April, authorities from Canberra Airport, the ACT government, and the Fijian government will gather with the Qantas partner and Oneworld Connect member to officially launch the flights, which will use a Boeing 737 MAX with eight business class recliners and 162 economy seats. On Viti Levu’s western shore, Nadi is the principal entry point to Fiji’s various resorts and tourist attractions. The 333 islands that make up this country are rich with exploration, adventure, and leisure options, from scuba and snorkelling among beautiful corals to relaxing on secluded beaches in the sun. Fiji Airways Introduces New Pricing Concept “Fly Your Way”
Fiji Airways has introduced a brand-new unbundled price model that will provide travellers with more options and flexibility in economy class. The fresh concept, dubbed “Fly Your Way,” lets customers choose from four categories of travel, including “Light,” “Value,” “Comfort,” and “Plus.” While the flexibility offered by each category varies, all options include in-flight meals and drinks, entertainment, and carry-on baggage (7kgs). Value additions include ticket change and cancellation options, priority and checked luggage, seat preference, and more. The Fly Your Way branded tickets, which go on sale on 3 March 2023, can be booked via the Fiji Airways website or a travel agent. The introduction of the new pricing concept coincided with Fiji Airways releasing the findings of a poll that revealed Australians placed the most importance on the ability to change or cancel a reservation. The survey, commissioned by Fiji Airways, found that 57% of Australians wanted more pricing flexibility, 29% wanted the ability to change their reservation, and 28% wanted refundable tickets. One in six (16%) travellers valued checked luggage above all else, and one in ten (10%) prioritised pre-selecting their meals, according to a poll of more than 500 Australians. 79% of Australians indicated they intended to go overseas in 2023. Andre Viljoen, Managing Director and CEO of Fiji Airways, said the Fly Your Way concept gave passengers precisely what they wanted. “Our research revealed that the ability to change and refund airline tickets is the most critical element for Australian travellers right now, and with our new ‘Fly Your Way’ fare options, passengers can book additional flexibility when travelling with Fiji Airways,” he added. “Whether travelling light for a weekend trip or bringing the entire family for an annual vacation, Fly Your Way provides the best value for money for all passengers.” “Our customers have different needs when they travel, whether for business or pleasure and with this new approach, we provide them the option of selecting the product that best meets their needs.” Over 80% of Australians want to travel this year, 40% are taking their families, 29% are going on vacation with their loved ones, and 17% are doing it alone, as revealed by Viljoen. One in seven (14% of all travellers) will be vacationing with a large group of friends, while 8% will be on business. Last Monday, the government of Fiji announced that visitors from outside the country would no longer be required to produce evidence of having been vaccinated against COVID-19 or to have purchased travel insurance.
Fiji Airways Announces New Flights To Tonga And Samoa

We are witnessing an increase in demand for flights from Brisbane to Tonga in December and Melbourne to Samoa in January.
