Agoda Reveals: Khao Lak, Seoul and Perhentian Islands are the Top Destinations for Slow Travel
With slow travel being one of the most talked about travel trends, digital travel platform Agoda shares the top Asian destinations for slow travel for longer stays. Thailand’s Khao Lak takes the crown as the tourist destination where travelers spend the most time. Searches for slow travel have grown threefold in the past five years, according to Google Trends *. Slow travel is an approach to travel that encourages travelers to stay longer at their destination, allowing them to create deeper connections with local culture and people, resulting in meaningful travel experiences. Across eight Asian markets the destinations with the highest average length of stay are Khao Lak in Thailand, Seoul in South Korea, Perhentian Islands in Malaysia, Tokyo in Japan, Siargao Island in the Philippines, Pekanbaru in Indonesia, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, and Ahmedabad in India respectively. Agoda analyzed the travel platform’s booking data from the first three months of 2024 to compile the rank**. In India, Ahmedabad is where travelers are spending the most consecutive time on average, with Goa and Faizabad rounding out the top three. When travelling internationally, travelers from India spend most time exploring Seoul in a quest for a slow travel experience. Krishna Rathi, Senior Country Director India Subcontinent and Maldives at Agoda shared, “It’s easy to understand why slow travel is one of the most fascinating travel trends right now. In today’s fast-paced world, many travelers will recognize the desire to use their holiday to disconnect from day-to-day life and form a deeper connection with the people and places they visit. It’s something we love to see and encourage at Agoda, as we are passionate about bridging the world through travel. For travelers looking to fully submerge in a holiday destination, whether it’s lazing around in a beach villa or settling in a chic city hotel, the destinations on our slow travel ranking are great places to start.” Some of the destinations on the list are also well-known favorites for shorter city breaks, but both the rural and urban destinations on the slow travel rank are worth spending an extended amount of time in. From swimming amidst the rich reefs in Perhentian Islands to having a feast in the streets in Ho Chi Minh City, here are some ways for travelers to gain a deeper local experience in these eight destinations. 1. Khao Lak, Thailand Surfing paradise Khao Lak is Asia’s most popular slow travel destination, and for good reason. Its many lesser known but beautiful beaches and nature spots are perfect places to unwind and let any day-to-day worries drift away. In the evening, the bars and restaurants around Phet Kasem road are great places to enjoy some live Thai folk music and perhaps even a game of snooker against the local talent. 2. Seoul, South Korea Seoul, a vibrant and dynamic city, also conceals isolated corners for those looking to enjoy a slower pace. The quiet backstreets of Buam-dong offer a unique mix of classy modern cafes and nostalgic shops from the 1960s-70s, like traditional rice mills and barbershops. The tranquil Baeksasil Valley invites travelers to leave behind the city's rapid pace and immerse themselves in a refreshing natural retreat with pristine water and a well-preserved forest. Literature lovers can explore Seongbuk-dong which houses the historic Hanok living quarters of famous Korean writers from as early as the 1930s. 3. Perhentian Islands, Malaysia Escape to the Perhentian Islands, Malaysia's quintessential beach paradise off Terengganu's coast, which offer slow-paced tropical bliss. Where crystalline waters meet soft sandy shores, the islands of Perhentian Kecil and Perhentian Besar make an ideal sanctuary for relaxation and aquatic adventures like snorkeling and diving amidst colorful coral reefs. Embrace the untouched allure of Perhentian Kecil's Adam & Eve Beach, accessible only by a trek through lush landscapes. In this secluded spot, reconnect with nature's splendor in undisturbed peace. 4. Tokyo, Japan A bustling megacity that is a top global destination, Tokyo is known for being impossible to experience in one trip. That’s why it’s best to slow it down and take the time to immerse in the little pleasures of Japan’s capital. Experience Tokyo’s charms like a local by wandering around some of the lesser-known neighborhoods such as Shimokitazawa for vintage shopping, Yanaka for a traditional atmosphere, and the bohemian neighborhood of Koenji for some alternative music and punk rock. And end the day by grabbing a craft cocktail in a tiny alleyway in Sangenjaya. 5. Siargao Islands, Philippines Siargao Island, a serene gem off Surigao del Norte, lures travelers away from the flurry of city life. Dubbed the "Surfing Capital of the Philippines," its famed surf spot 'Cloud 9' faces the open seas and entices surf enthusiasts with some of the best waves year-round. The island’s size notwithstanding, Siargao has an abundance of natural marvels worth exploring. Traverse the island on a rented motorcycle, dive into the sculpted Magpupungko Rock Pools, and unravel the mystique of the glowing Hagukan Cave amid Sohoton Cove's splendor. Here, even a month isn't enough to satisfy the lure of discovery - Siargao calls for repeat visits. 6. Pekanbaru, Indonesia Pekanbaru, the bustling capital of Riau province on Sumatra Island, beautifully intertwines vibrant city life with rich Malay culture and history. Idyllic locations like Lake Siak and Lake Kayangan offer a leisurely day out on the waters; rent a boat, swim, or simply unwind among the picturesque surroundings. The historic alleyways of Kampung Bandar are lined with wooden houses and welcoming locals. For a cultural experience, the Muara Takus Buddhist temple complex nearby transports travelers back to the past. 7. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Famous for its bustling streets, Ho Chi Minh city pulses with vibrant energy that’s best enjoyed when embraced fully. Step into the rhythm of the locals and experience the city slowing down by enjoying a traditional Ca Phe Sua Da, Vietnamese coffee, in the morning. Taste the culture of Vietnam by indulging in the epic street food variety and then take a break from the buzz and seek solace among a collection of over a thousand trees in one of the city's oldest parks, Tao Dan Park. Saigon presents a diverse array of experiences to be discovered at a relaxed tempo. 8. Ahmedabad, India Ahmedabad invites explorers to take the time to discover its old city lanes, colonial-era havelis, and the iconic City Walls. There are authentic flavors to be discovered at Manek Chowk market and there's solace to be found along the Sabarmati River. A visit to Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram and the Calico Museum of Textiles connects travelers to the city's history, and legacy of its rich cotton textile industry. Whether for slow travel, short trips, or multi-destination travel itineraries, Agoda is committed to helping travelers to see the world with great value deals on over 4 million holiday properties, in addition to flights and activities. Deal hunters planning a slow travel trip are encouraged to look out for the many long stay deals available on Agoda.

JW Marriott Khao Lak unveils the ‘JW Garden’ full farm model and wilderness park
JW Marriott Khao Lak proudly introduces the JW Garden, a pioneering venture dedicated to holistic wellness, sustainability, conservation and immersive nature encounters. Spanning 27 acres, the JW Garden operates as a fully-fledged farm and sanctuary, placing a strong emphasis on ethical sourcing. Boasting over 200 varieties of indigenous plants, fruits, and herbs, the site offers guests guided tours to explore its rich vegetation and learn about organic farming practices. Free-range chickens and ducks within the garden yield fresh eggs daily, enhancing the resort's commitment to ethical and sustainable food sourcing. Carefully harvested, these organic ingredients find their way into the resort's kitchens, enriching the flavors of cuisine and underpinning the culinary creations across JW Marriott Khao Lak's esteemed restaurants. Working towards eliminating waste is a key objective of the hotel and the composting plant at the JW Garden repurposes every viable scrap from the resort kitchens and dining rooms. This full-circle, farm-to-table approach ensures freshness, quality, and superior nutritional benefits, fostering a deeper connection to the land and promoting sustainable dining experiences. Guests can fully immerse themselves in the vibrant world of the JW Garden through daily tours led by resident environmentalists, who offer insights into sustainable initiatives and conservation. They'll encounter beloved farm animals like water buffaloes, goats, free-range chickens and ducks, along with butterflies and honeybees, which provide organic honey for resort breakfasts. At the Environment School, children receive invaluable knowledge through engaging sessions, empowering them to become tomorrow's change-makers, committed to preserving the natural world for future generations. The JW Garden's signature initiative involves reintroducing the Nipa Palm, or Mangrove Palm, a Thai native species known locally as "cha:k." This palm holds immense ecological and economic significance, thriving uniquely in mangrove forests. With versatile applications from thatching roofs to sugar production, it enriches biodiversity and promotes sustainability by reforesting land formerly used as shrimp farms. Additionally, this initiative will serve as an education center for local school children and the community, promoting awareness of ecological restoration and sustainable practices. Beyond farm tours and education opportunities, guests can partake in a variety of engaging activities, from tranquil bird-watching and scenic kayaking on a private lagoon to hands-on experiences like planting and harvesting herbs and produce. A newly created running track provides an invigorating way to experience the landscape's biodiversity while incorporating fitness routines. It encompasses a freshwater lake surrounded by tropical marshes and scrubland teeming with wildlife while the Yoga Shala and Lagoon Escape provides a serene space for guests to reconnect with nature. Reflecting on this milestone, Abhimanyu Singh, General Manager of JW Marriott Khao Lak, remarked, "At our core, we're dedicated to sustainability, innovation, and holistic wellbeing. The JW Garden embodies this commitment, showcasing our passion for nurturing the earth and our guests. We seamlessly integrate our farm-to-table philosophy into every aspect of the resort experience, from recreation to spa indulgence, with a focus on our proudly sourced ingredients. We aim to foster mindfulness and connection to the present moment, inspiring a deeper appreciation for nature and wellbeing lasting beyond our guests' departure." The JW Garden builds upon the success of the Bamboo Shark Nursery and Conservation Centre, which was inaugurated last year as the first of its kind within Marriott International's Asia Pacific portfolio. Developed in collaboration with the Oceans For All Foundation (OFA), this dedicated marine sanctuary protects the threatened bamboo sharks of the Andaman Sea. Through Good Travel with Marriott Bonvoy, guests can actively contribute to the preservation of the local marine environment while enjoying an exceptional experience.
JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort Suites opens with 52 keys
JW Marriott announced the opening of the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort Suites, an all-suite luxury retreat nestled in a beautiful beachside setting on southern Thailand’s Andaman coast. The resort’s 52 stylish two-bedroom suites range from 89 to 111 square meters with bright indoor and outdoor spaces, Southern Thai-inspired design, contemporary living areas and private terraces or balconies that overlook the natural tropical surroundings. On the ground floor, a collection of pool access suites allows guests to step straight into the inviting 2.4 km-long lagoon swimming pool, Southeast Asia’s longest. JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort Suites shares the extensive facilities of JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa, and is located in the box seat for family activities, overlooking the new Aqua Play Zone, an exhilarating destination for families and where the water fun, literally, lasts all day long. Highlights include the wave pool where kids and families get the chance to duck and dive before heading over to the fountain trampoline, an inventive activity designed for, what else, jumping! The aqua theme continues with a waterslide and outdoor playground before kids and parents can retreat to the Sala Restaurant & Bar, a cool, casual outlet serving comfortable, familiar and healthy classics. Sala is expected to quickly become basecamp for kids during their stay so they are close to the action – and can take part in the daily pasta making, mixology masterclasses and marshmallow roasting held at Sala. Friends and family can also have a go at Muay Thai Sea Boxing, a hilarious but highly competitive sport where two boxers sit astride a poll and try to knock each other off. One of many other activities available are helping the environment in the Art of Trash workshop, or guests can simply cruise around the 2.4 km pool on their floating hammocks, grabbing an ice-cold fresh coconut on the way courtesy of the resort boats that ply the waters - before catching a movie at the beach. Alternatively, families can enjoy a beach picnic in our family tents – or enjoy the interactive Teppanyaki Show at Sakura Japanese restaurant. The resort’s collection of 11 restaurants and bars offer an array of dining choices, ranging from traditional Thai cuisine with sunset views at Ta-Krai to authentic Italian cuisine at Olive, and international fare at Waterfront. New additions include Sala Restaurant & Pool Bar, while Drift Beach Bar & Grill is the resort’s new steak and seafood grill, inspired by regional Mediterranean cuisine. All-day refreshments and cocktails can be enjoyed at the Deli, Beach Bar, Infinity Pool Bar, Aquamarine Pool Bar and Czar Lobby Bar. Family vacations are all about reconnecting with your loved ones, and a key ingredient for this is the JW Garden, an outdoor space dedicated to cultivating organic vegetables and herbs. Here families are guided by the resort’s chef to pick fresh ingredients and learn how to cook Thai dishes. Alternatively, guests can enjoy a family picnic among the fragrant herbs and flowers, or even in the privacy of their own suite or villa. The unique Suites experience also provides access to state-of-the-art meeting facilities, a fully-equipped fitness center, tennis and squash courts, the Kids Club and Quan Spa, which offers holistic healing therapies from traditional Thai massages to revitalising body wraps and scrubs, many of which use organic coconut oil produced onsite at the resort. A series of serene spaces such as cozy cabanas let guests reconnect and create memorable moments, whilst Khuk Khak Beach offers an idyllic setting to stroll, splash or sit in the shade of palm trees. “The opening of JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort Suites, with its spacious accommodation and outstanding service co-located with the expanded and renovated JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa, provides the perfect accommodation option for families, young and old, enabling all guests to come together and create meaningful connections,” said Jakob Helgen, area vice president – Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia & Myanmar, Marriott International. “I am delighted to unveil JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort Suites and to welcome travelers from around the world,” said Abhimanyu Singh, general manager, JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort Suites. “The JW Marriott brand focuses on what matters most in life, connecting with our loved ones and enriching the mind, body and spirit.”
