Zoom Travel Insurance says travel still a top priority for young Australians
A new report released by Zoom Travel Insurance reveals that travel remains a top priority for young Australians despite current economic issues, including a weakening Australian dollar. The Australian insurance firm conducted a survey among 500 young Australians, revealing that 72 percent still consider travel a necessity regardless of mounting costs. According to marketing manager Natasha Sullivan: “Gen Z values the personal growth and social currency that come from seeing the world, despite the rising cost of living and a weakening Aussie exchange rate.” Making necessary adjustments Sullivan pointed out that a number of young travellers are making adjustments due to ongoing financial challenges. It may be recalled that, in January of this year, the Australian dollar plummeted to a five-year low, losing ground against the Euro and the British pound. As a result, international travel has become more expensive for Australians, particularly to destinations in Europe and the United States. Sullivan said: “Due to a weak Aussie dollar, students and backpackers will have to tighten their budgets even more, particularly when visiting the US, the UK, and Europe,” she said. “As a result, many may opt for destinations such as New Zealand, where the Aussie dollar is still strong or budget holiday hotspots throughout Southeast Asia.” A generational shift in spending patterns The Zoom Travel Insurance report was further bolstered by Southern Cross Travel Insurance’s Future of Travel 2025 report which highlights changes in travel spending habits among different generations. The Southern Cross report shows that 45 percent of Australians between the ages of 18 and 44 would rather travel than buy a home. On the other hand, those 45 and older have been shelving trips in favour of keeping their cash to support their families; of these 48 percent were from New South Wales and 32 percent from Queensland. Staying safe Zoom Travel Insurance also noted a recent increase in policy uptake among young travellers. Sullivan said: “Over the past year we've noticed an increase in Gen Z customers, along with a rise in claims from young travellers. From lost luggage to medical emergencies, Gen Z is recognising the value of being protected when things go wrong. With the rising cost of travel, even minor mishaps can significantly impact their budgets.” She added that while younger travellers have traditionally been less likely to purchase travel insurance, this trend appears to be shifting. As she puts it: “Travel insurance is no longer just a nice-to-have; it’s a must-have. The upfront cost of insurance is minimal compared to the thousands of dollars you could end up spending on an unforeseen incident. Young travellers have traditionally been the least likely to purchase travel insurance, but our findings suggest this trend may be shifting.”
UN Tourism opens Regional Office for the Americas in Rio
The new Regional Office will focus on strengthening investment promotion. One of its first key outcomes will be a set of guidelines aimed at boosting green investments, recognizing the importance of biodiversity for tourism in the Americas. The Rio Office will also develop a strategy for the technical training of young people, equipping them with the professional skills needed for the sector’s growth throughout the region. On the occasion of the inauguration, UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili held a bilateral meeting with Brazil’s Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino. The meeting focused on the projects to be carried out at the Regional Office and how it can serve as a hub for tourism development, both in Brazil and throughout the region. Secretary-General Pololikashvili stated: “The UN Tourism Regional Office for the Americas will support the advancement of the tourism sector not only in Brazil but also across the entire region. Rio de Janeiro will become a veritable centre of leadership and ideas, focusing on growth, securing investments for the sector, and harnessing the power of tourism for sustainable and inclusive development.” Other key initiatives to be led by the Regional Office include women’s empowerment, with a dedicated event on the topic set to take place in 2025. Additionally, the Office will advance efforts in indigenous tourism, accessibility, and multi-destination routes in the region, such as the Jesuit Route in South America, among others. The Regional Office for the Americas strengthens UN Tourism’ presence on the ground, bringing it closer to its Members. In addition to its Headquarters in Madrid, the Organization now has a Regional Office for the Middle East in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and an office in Nara, Japan. A Regional Office for Africa is planned to be opened in Marrakesh, Morocco. The Regional Offices enable UN Tourism to provide tailored support to its Members in all regions of the world, focusing on priorities such as tourism innovation, investment, and education and training across the sector.

Gen Z prioritising “slower travel” for business
New research from Trainline Partner Solutions (TPS) highlights a significant shift in business travel attitudes amongst Gen Z professionals. The research shows a growing preference for ‘slower business travel’ - lower-carbon journeys that align career progression with environmental consciousness, even if they take longer. The survey of 1,001 UK-based Gen Z professionals reveals that almost two-thirds (60%) of respondents are open to adopting slower business travel, such as rail, if it significantly reduces their carbon footprint. Three-quarters (75%) are more likely to prioritise such options if their company actively supports them with clear policies and incentives. Yet, less than half (44%) of respondents said their company currently encourages lower-carbon travel through flexible policies. This comes as Gen Z respondents strive to maintain their sustainability principles without having to sacrifice their career ambitions. Business travel remains a key driver of career progression for Gen Z, with 94% believing travelling for business is important for their progression. The top benefits include building client relationships (46%) and networking with senior colleagues or peers (45%). Looking ahead, nearly two-thirds (65%) of those surveyed anticipate that business travel will play an even more significant role as they advance in their careers. This is critical, as Gen Z are estimated to make up three-tenths of the workforce by 2030, meaning businesses will have to adapt business travel programmes to the shifting demand if they want to compete in the talent market. Whilst business travel offers clear benefits, it also raises environmental concerns, with most (89%) of professionals worried about its carbon footprint and over a third (37%) feeling a personal conflict between career travel and the environmental impact. Just under three in five (59%) fear missing out on career opportunities if they reduce travel. Many also feel pressure to choose quicker, cheaper travel options over lower carbon ones, with half (50%) of respondents citing time and budget constraints. Andrew Cruttenden, General Manager at Trainline Partner Solutions, commented: “Gen Z is redefining what business travel looks like, shifting the emphasis away from purely fast and convenient, to also be mindful and sustainable. While Gen Z professionals still want business travel, many don’t want to compromise their personal principles. There is a huge opportunity for the business travel sector to adapt and address this growing need, and at TPS we can help ensure that rail travel is integrated as a seamless and attractive option that meets the demands of Gen Z business travellers.”
Motorsport star Bianca Bustamante is Priority Pass’s new APAC brand advocate

As Priority Pass' newest Asia Pacific brand advocate, the 20-year-old will champion the brand's promise to elevate every journey into something special. Bustamante said of the appointment: "I am proud to be a brand advocate for Priority Pass, a brand that supports my passion for travel and my goal to inspire others to challenge their limits. The nature of the sport means having to travel to different countries and cities. As I prepare for my debut in the GB3 Championship with Elite Motorsport this year, I'm grateful to now have access to Priority Pass' global network of airport lounges and travel experiences in which I can conserve much-needed energy ahead of my races.” Collinson International’s global chief commercial officer and Asia-Pacific executive chair Todd Hancock added: "Bianca's remarkable achievements at such a young age are testament to her grit, talent, and resilience. Her story embodies Priority Pass' commitment to pushing boundaries and setting new standards.
