TDM AWARDS - NOMINATE NOW!

Sweden's tourism board, Visit Skåne, is offering a unique opportunity for guests to stay for free in a beachfront cabin on the eastern coast of Skåne, provided they adhere to a strict 45-decibel sound limit. This initiative, running from 29 September to 16 October, aims to highlight the restorative power of silence amidst the noise of modern life.

The Stay Quiet 2026 initiative invites guests to experience the tranquillity of the Baltic Sea coastline, with a decibel metre installed in the cabin to ensure compliance. Exceeding the sound threshold, equivalent to a soft whisper, will result in the termination of the stay. This lighthearted challenge underscores a serious issue: environmental noise is the second-largest environmental health risk, according to the World Health Organisation.

Scientific research supports the benefits of natural quietude. A 2025 study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that exposure to natural environments can restore cognitive functions, such as working memory and attentional control, with optimal recovery occurring after 30 minutes.

Visit Skåne's Map of Quietude offers a digital guide to the region's most serene spots, complete with soundscapes. Among the top five quietest sanctuaries in Skåne are Dörröds fälad and Håkull, both averaging 37 decibels.

This initiative not only promotes mental well-being but also showcases Sweden's abundant quiet spaces, which are ten times more prevalent than in countries like Germany.

As Josefine Nordgren, Brand Manager at Visit Skåne, states, "People need less noise and more presence."
