Top five reasons for expected Staycation boom in 2023

Data from holiday home operator, Verdant Leisure, suggests that 2023 may see a boom in UK staycations due to the cost of living. As part of its annual review of the travel industry, a survey of 1,000 of Verdants’ customers found that more than four in five (84%) say they are likely to go on a staycation in 2023 with over half (56%) of those saying that the cost-of-living crisis would steer them towards a staycation over a holiday abroad1.

Research carried out by holiday home operator Verdant Leisure explores both industry and internal booking data to reveal the biggest travel trends for the coming year.

With a clear demand for staycations in the future, Bev Dixon, Chief Operating Officer at Verdant Leisure shares what we can expect to see in the UK staycation market in 2023:

1) Budget holidays are on the rise
On average, there are 7,000 monthly google searches for ‘cheap holidays’, showing a clear desire for affordable getaways2. The data from Verdant Leisure revealed that almost half (46%) of respondents said their staycation budget is less than £200 per person, while over three quarters (76%) will prioritise good value for money when looking to book their holiday.

Bev commented: “The cost-of-living crisis has affected people up and down the UK, so it’s no surprise that people are looking to cut back on their holiday spending. With that in mind, we can expect to see those who do go on their holidays to be looking to save costs in other areas to make their trips more affordable overall.”

2} Scotland is at the top of the bucket list
A popular destination for nature lovers, Scotland saw people travel for more than three million domestic overnight stays in 20213. Survey data from Verdant Leisure, reflects the increased demand for tourism in Scotland, with two in five (40%) respondents choosing Scotland as their most desired UK holiday destination.

Bev added: “Scotland really does have it all, and that is why it’s such a loved location by our holidaymakers. Whether you want to explore its rich history, challenge yourself to a hike or sit by the ocean, Scotland has something magical to offer. As the desire to staycation increases, the demand for holidays in Scotland is going to follow.”

3) Holidaymakers are looking to explore the outdoors
According to online data, the most popular holiday destination for domestic vacations in the UK is the coast/seaside4, while data from Verdant Leisure similarly shows that almost two thirds (61%) of holidaymakers are hoping to get away to the beach for their holidays, while one in three (30%) are keen to explore more countryside getaways.

Bev said: “Getting out and exploring the outdoors has always been a huge part of our offering, but we are seeing noticeably more people interested in parks with ample nature in the surrounding areas. Over two fifths (44%) of survey respondents said they want to visit more national parks on next year’s holidays and it’s great to see more appetite for the UK’s natural offerings.

“Coastal destinations are the perfect way to expose yourself to nature if you’re not naturally the outdoorsy type. As we offer both types of holidays, we get to see visitors get the best of both worlds and make the most of it all year round.”

4) Romantic getaways are on the cards for couples
Escaping with a romantic partner has become important for a lot of couples, with many people looking for lodges and quaint locations to spend a weekend or so. From the data, almost three in five people (58%) said they were most likely to book a UK holiday with their significant other next year.

Bev commented: “For most, going on holiday is about unwinding and escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life. That’s why so many people are looking to get away with their partner to countryside or seaside destinations, where they can’t be disturbed by the outside world. Accommodation is a huge part of this so it’s not surprising to see the usual cosier, more romantic options like lodges are desired by those looking for a getaway with their partners.”

5) People want to be with their pets
Brits just can’t get enough of their furry friends and many plan to take them on their holidays next year. Verdants’ research shows two in five (40%) are keeping an eye out for pet-friendly facilities when choosing their next UK holiday destination and want their pets to have just as much fun as they do.

Bev added: “Taking pets on holiday has become increasingly popular, with pet owners wanting some extra company on their travels. Animals love playing on the beach, splashing in the sea and running through woodlands just as much as we do, so it makes sense that people are wanting to bring them along”.
