Families across the UK are seizing the opportunity to escape to Europe during the May half-term, with Mediterranean destinations proving particularly popular. As schools break up this Friday, a surge in travel is expected, with many families opting for short-haul holidays to enjoy the sunshine.

According to recent research by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), 17% of UK adults planning holidays abroad have chosen to travel in May. ABTA members report strong demand for destinations such as Spain, Italy, the Balearic and Canary Islands, Portugal, Croatia, and Greece. Majorca, Alicante, and Tenerife are among the top beach destinations, whilst city breaks in Milan, Nice, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, Budapest, Dublin, and Rome are also in high demand. Additionally, some travellers are opting for cruises to explore multiple Mediterranean locations.

ABTA Chief Executive Mark Tanzer commented on the trend, stating, “In the face of economic and geopolitical challenges, people are still getting away on their holidays this May and making the most of some excellent deals.” He emphasised the enduring appeal of experiencing different cultures and landscapes, noting that package holidays offer both value and peace of mind.

As families prepare for their half-term getaways, the travel industry is witnessing a robust recovery, underscoring the continued desire for international travel despite ongoing challenges
