The Wellness Tourism Association (WTA) has introduced the Six Principles for Responsible Retreats, marking the first industry standards for the rapidly expanding global retreat market. As the wellness retreat sector is projected to nearly double to $363.9 billion by 2032, these principles seek to provide clarity and consistency for both consumers and industry professionals.
The framework addresses a significant gap in the industry, which until now lacked shared benchmarks to guide travellers and retreat organisers. The principles offer a practical checklist for consumers, helping them identify what to look for and avoid potential pitfalls when booking retreats. For the industry, these standards encourage alignment around responsible practices, fostering greater trust and transparency.
Dr. Sheri Rosenthal, chair of the WTA Retreat Committee and a leading retreat strategist, played a pivotal role in developing the framework. With over 25 years of experience and more than 1,000 retreats planned globally, Rosenthal emphasises the importance of responsible leadership in this growing sector. "As more people turn to retreats for personal growth and transformation, these principles provide a foundation for responsible leadership," she stated.
The WTA will host a live Wellness Travel Talks conversation and Q&A on 29 July 2026, offering further insights into the framework. This initiative is expected to significantly impact the future of wellness travel, promoting a more organised and trustworthy retreat industry
