The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has unveiled a global campaign to identify the 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World, inviting people worldwide to nominate and vote for landmarks built since 1801 that have significantly impacted travel and tourism. This initiative aims to celebrate attractions that not only hold architectural and cultural significance but also play a transformative role in revitalising local economies, attracting investment, and creating jobs.
The campaign, which began on 7 July 2026, will unfold over a year, culminating in the announcement of the seven wonders on 7 July 2027. It highlights the importance of investing in tourism infrastructure and cultural assets as drivers of economic growth and regeneration. Notable examples include the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, which have all enhanced their destinations' global standing.
Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of WTTC, emphasised the broader impact of these landmarks, stating, "The most influential tourism assets do far more than attract visitors. They create jobs, stimulate investment, support local businesses, strengthen communities and enhance the global profile of destinations."
The campaign will recognise both globally celebrated icons and emerging landmarks, considering factors such as tourism contribution, economic impact, and community value. By showcasing these sites, WTTC aims to inspire new investments in tourism and spread economic benefits across regions and communities. Public nominations are now open, with the first round of nominees to be announced in January 2027
