Norwegian Cruise Line’s first Chinese cruise ship, Norwegian Joy, has been officially launched in Shanghai.

The naming ceremony was overseen by Frank Del Rio, Norwegian’s president & CEO, and Chinese celebrity Wang Leehom, who acted as the vessel’s godfather.

The event marked end of a month-long grand inaugural tour, which saw Norwegian Joy visit Singapore, Qingdao, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, as well as operating VIP cruises from Shanghai and Tianjin.

“After years spent carefully designing this amazing vessel, my team and I are both proud and thrilled to finally christen the world’s first cruise ship custom-designed for the wonderful people of China,” said Del Rio.

“This is truly a special moment for the entire Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings family, our valued travel partners, honoured guests and dedicated officers and crew across our fleet.”

The 3,883-passenger vessel Norwegian Joy offers a series of amenities designed for Chinese travellers, including VIP accommodation, a two-level go-karting track, laser tag course and a gaming area that features simulator rides and virtual reality technology. There are also 28 F&B outlets and an extensive duty-free shopping area.

Chinese artist Tan Ping was also commissioned to create the hull art that adorns every Norwegian cruise ship. His design depicts a phoenix, which represents beauty and good luck in Chinese culture.

Norwegian Joy will now operate Asian voyages from its homeports of Shanghai and Tianjin.
