Akasa Air, India's rapidly expanding airline, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in India. This collaboration aims to strengthen the country's SAF ecosystem and aligns with global aviation sustainability frameworks, including the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) CORSIA mandate.
The MoU outlines a framework for the supply and offtake of SAF blended Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) at select airports across India. The partnership will focus on long-term supply readiness by sharing demand forecasts, supporting production planning, and increasing SAF blending as the domestic ecosystem develops. Both companies will engage in knowledge sharing, policy advocacy, and collaboration with government and industry stakeholders to support India's SAF ecosystem.
Ankur Goel, Chief Financial Officer of Akasa Air, stated, "At Akasa Air, sustainability is one of our core values, shaping decisions we make across our business." Subhankar Sen, Director of Marketing at BPCL, added, "BPCL is committed to supporting the aviation industry's decarbonisation journey through sustainable and innovative energy solutions."
Akasa Air's Boeing 737 MAX fleet, powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines, plays a crucial role in its mission to operate an environmentally progressive and fuel-efficient fleet. The airline has also partnered with OpenAirlines to implement SkyBreathe®, a fuel management solution that reduces carbon emissions and enhances operational efficiency.
This partnership underscores Akasa Air's commitment to a sustainable future for Indian aviation, supporting the Government of India's energy transition and decarbonisation objectives
