In a move set to redefine the global ground transportation landscape, multimodal travel giant Omio Group has entered an agreement to acquire Rail Europe, the globally renowned rail distribution platform.
Upon completion of the transaction, Rail Europe will join Omio Group’s powerhouse portfolio, which already boasts its flagship B2C booking platform, a robust B2B distribution business, and the popular travel discovery brand Rome2Rio.
The strategic union creates an undisputed heavyweight in the sector: together, the group will sell over 22 million train tickets annually, collaborate with more than 28,000 transport operators and travel sellers, and offer the world’s most comprehensive ground transportation proposition.
The proposed transaction is currently subject to a consultation process with France’s Comité Social et Économique (CSE), which will issue its advisory opinion.
Completion of the acquisition will remain pending until this standard regulatory process is successfully concluded.
A significant new alliance
Under the proposed deal, Rail Europe will retain its established, trusted brand identity, continuing to serve its extensive network of B2B partners and consumers.
However, it will now be supercharged by Omio Group’s advanced technology stack, platform capabilities, and vast multimodal inventory.
For Berlin-headquartered Omio, the acquisition unlocks Rail Europe’s formidable global footprint, which spans travel agents and operators across more than 70 countries.
It also brings over 90 years of deep-rooted rail expertise and a highly respected international consumer brand into the fold, significantly expanding Omio’s partner reach and strengthening its international customer base.
This consolidation comes at a crucial juncture: driven by environmental initiatives and massive government investments in infrastructure, the global rail market is projected to surpass $300 billion by 2032 as travellers increasingly shift away from road and air travel.
A transformative moment
Omio Group’s chief B2B officer Jean-Francois Bessiron hailed the acquisition as a major step forward for the industry, particularly in challenging legacy systems.
He remarked: "This deal marks a transformative moment for the future of global ground transport. Omio and Rail Europe would give the industry a player with the technology and scale to make connected, accessible, and affordable train travel a reality for all. The sector has been constrained by outdated systems and controlled by dominant players for far too long."
Echoing this optimism, Rail Europe executive chairman and chief executive Björn Bender emphasised the natural synergy between the two travel tech pioneers.
According to Bender: "The past few years have been transformational for Rail Europe. With our teams and partners, we built an independent business and a unique position in the global rail industry. For the next chapter, Omio and Rail Europe are a natural fit. Omio brings significant scale and transformative technology. Rail Europe adds considerable rail experience, a trusted international consumer brand, and the strongest B2B distribution network. Together, we would offer more to our travellers, partners and the rail industry than either company could achieve on its own."
