Messe Berlin signs understandings with TripAdvisor and the Singapore Tourism Board
Messe Berlin signed two key agreements with the Singapore Tourism Board and TripAdvisor yesterday, 15th October, on the first day of ITB Asia 2025. These two understandings are expected to drive change with regard to experiential tourism within the Asia-Pacific and beyond. According to Messe Berlin senior vice-president David Ruetz: "There's a growing desire for inspiration, to create lasting moments; and this growing desire for authentic journeys is what makes experiential travel one of the most powerful forces that shapes tourism today. It's about culture, it's about wellness and well-being, culinary journeys, and even spiritual journeys. It challenges us, as an industry, to think differently about the products, the services, and even the processes that we offer." Coming soon Beginning with ITB Asia 2026, the event will put greater emphasis on high-growth segments shaping the future of tourism. As such it will feature zones dedicated to experiential travel, wellness tourism, luxury and lifestyle, as well as both sustainable and regenerative tourism. These new verticals are bound to stand out on the exhibition floor through highlight zones and dedicated pavilions giving exhibitors and buyers greater opportunities to explore emerging trends and connect with evolving traveller demands. ITB Asia 2025 offers a preview of these developments with this year's Experiences Zone which features offerings from Disney Adventure, the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, and Resorts World Sentosa. Next year, a dedicated Experience Pavilion done together with TripAdvisor will be grabbing participants' attention. Working with TripAdvisor Messe Berlin's understanding with TripAdvisor was co-signed with the latter's director of sales in the Asia Pacific Scott Wegener. As such, it entails the creation of the Experience Pavilion which will be curated in tandem by Messe Berlin and TripAdvisor. TripAdvisor will develop the Pavilion’s theme and content framework, leveraging its global network to bring together selected experience-focused providers. On the other hand, Messe Berlin Singapore will ensure prime positioning, media visibility, and targeted buyer engagement. Wegener declared: “We’re excited to collaborate with Messe Berlin on the Experience Pavilion at ITB Asia. Travellers today are no longer just booking trips; they’re seeking transformative, culturally rich, and emotionally resonant experiences. This pavilion brings together the world’s leading experience-driven travel brands, helping the industry respond to this powerful shift in consumer expectations.” An expanded agreement with the Singapore Tourism Board Meanwhile, Messe Berlin Asia Pacific's new understanding with STB seeks to deepen collaboration for ITB Asia from 2026 to 2028. This strategic partnership aims to further elevate ITB Asia by jointly developing new content pillars, co-marketing the event, enhancing buyer engagement initiatives, and facilitating greater government participation. As such, Messe Berlin and STB are committed to strengthening ITB Asia’s position as Asia’s leading travel trade show and a key platform for the global tourism industry. As STB executive director for exhibitions and conferences Poh Chi Chuan put it: "This strategic partnership with Messe Berlin reinforces Singapore's position as the World's Best MICE City and aligns with our Tourism 2040 goals to cultivate stronger MICE visitor demand and create distinctive experiences." He added that ITB Asia is a high-value business event that drives innovation, knowledge exchange, and economic impact. Poh concluded by saying: "We are honoured to continue hosting the event from 2026 to 2028. Singapore is building an ecosystem where companies and talents co-create tourism solutions, and partnerships like this help us shape the future of tourism."
The Journey Changes You: Tripadvisor’s Scott Wegener Shares the Future of Meaningful Travel
Representative Image: Couple enjoy travel through Southeast Asia contemplating the views of Mua Cave, Vietnam Scott Wegener, Head of Asia Pacific at Tripadvisor shares four key takeaways for Travel Advisors to tackle the changing travel trends. He shared these while addressing the audience during the opening keynote at ITB India 2025. 1) Curate: Firstly, curate, don't just offer, build travel packages rooted in storytelling, local engagement and wellness. 2) Design offerings for the younger, rising middle class, not only for the more elderly urban elites. Gen Z and millennials are the fastest growing middle-class segment driven by urbanisation, higher education and think digital roots and digital connectivity, they will constitute 60% of South Asia's travel spend. 3) Partner with your local communities. Invest in authentic, sustainable and ethical travel. It is super important in this world of AI , where one is trying to work out what's authentic and what's not authentic. 4) Leverage, User Generated Content Leverage, real travel stories. Encourage it in your businesses, because it's going to help bring your destination or your business to life. Those who move beyond conventional tourism to deliver genuinely meaningful experiences will not only capture the hearts, minds and wallets of South Asia travellers, but you're also going to help shape the future of global travel itself. Sharing a couple of examples of where these trends are already being put into action by certain organisations and businesses, he further stated The first one is Hong Kong Tourism Board, who have recently launched their ‘Tourism is Everywhere’ campaign that showcases city-wide living culture and people first exploration beyond just the famous landmarks, which is exactly what that nano neighborhoods trend stands for. For example, the Uttar Pradesh government in India has implemented QR audio portals at 100 plus attractions. So again, you're not just going to the attraction and having a look. They've got these portals there that allow you to have an immersive, enabled journey through the rich history, culture and natural beauty of that attraction that you're visiting. There's a collection of properties called the Sharjah Collection in the UAE that's just launched a new property called ‘Nomad’. It's an off-grid trailer experience in the mountain valleys of Cal bar that emphasizes digital detox and nature immersion. Grocery store tourism is being integrated into tour operator and hotel offerings right now, it's seen as both a cultural adventure and an authentic way to experience daily life in the city that you're in, also experiencing the local flavours, the snacks, the different ingredients, and experiencing the culinary habits in a city that you are not familiar with. It's a great way to learn more about the food culture in a city. I was in Tokyo recently, and I saw it all around me, people tourists that were going into the seven elevens, the food parks and buying up on snacks and various things. You've got to be careful about what you can take back to the country. I understand, but still, it's very, very popular. He left the audience with a quote from the late Anthony Bourdain that he wrote back in 2007 “Travel isn't always pretty, it isn't always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that's okay. The Journey changes you. It should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart and on your body. If you take something with you, hopefully you leave something good behind. I think this perfectly sums up the movement in travel that's happening right now.”

Heidelberg: A Culinary Melting Pot Heidelberg, with 25% of its restaurants rated five-star, presents a diverse culinary landscape for travellers to explore. Whether seeking local delicacies or international flavours, visitors are sure to find a dining experience that delights and surprises. Below, travel expert and owner of European Waterways Maryanne Sparkes provides top tips on choosing the best restaurant when away from home: Avoid persuasive greeters “Be wary of restaurants where someone is actively trying to lure you in from the street. It can be difficult to say no, but quality establishments usually do not need to employ aggressive tactics to attract customers.” Check local reviews and forums “Use local review sites and forums, like TripAdvisor or Yelp, but focus on reviews from locals as opposed to from tourists. Local diners often have a better sense of which establishments truly represent good quality and authentic cuisine.” Pay attention to locally sourced ingredients “A menu which features seasonal and locally sourced ingredients is typically a sign that a restaurant offers more flavourful and authentic dishes. Look out for fresh seafood and locally sourced meat and vegetables.” Look out for the locals “Before choosing a restaurant, it's important to do some window shopping. If the restaurant is filled with locals, it’s typically a good sign. Locals usually know the best spots and are less likely to frequent tourist traps. “Likewise, ask for recommendations from the locals. If you’re staying at a bed and breakfast, ask the staff where they like to eat. They might be able to point you in the direction of a hidden gem.” Prioritise restaurants with fewer dishes on the menu “A menu with fewer ingredients often indicates that the restaurant focuses on quality over quantity. Usually, in these kinds of restaurants, dishes are fresh and made to order.” So, next time you're in a major UK city, ditch the guidebook and follow the locals' lead. You might just discover a hidden gem serving up flavours that'll tantalise your taste buds!
