Dubai airport unveils fast-track passport control service

Dubai recently launched a new fast-track passport control service that uses face and iris-recognition technologies. The new biometric systems deployed at 122 smart gates at arrival and departure terminals in Dubai airports enable passengers to complete passport control procedures between 5 and 9 seconds depending on the movement and steps of the passenger. This system contributed to enhancing travellers’ confidence in the emirate, as such precautionary measures in light of the pandemic formed a safety umbrella for them, said Major General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General, General Directorate of Residency & Foreign Affairs - Dubai (GDRFA-D). He said the department was able to continue its work to translate the visions of the wise leadership in developing government services and their service channels in a way that contributes to enhancing the quality of life and achieving happiness for the customer. In his welcome address at the Airport Security Forum at the Dubai Airport Show 2021, Gen Al Marri highlighted the UAE’s efforts in protecting and security of its ports and providing an exceptional experience for the travellers. The UAE has provided a unique model to be emulated in various fields until it becomes the most wanted living, residency, and work destination, in addition to the list of competitive indicators including safety and security index. The UAE in general and Dubai in particular are on the verge of receiving the most important event, the Expo 2020 Dubai, which was postponed last year due to the pandemic.

Dubai airport achieves carbon accreditation milestone

Dubai International and Dubai World Central have announced that they reached an important milestone on their journey towards neutrality by achieving Level 3 (Optimisation) of the Airports Council International’s (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. The Level 3 of the programme provides an international airport-specific framework for active carbon management and continual improvement through partnerships between the airport and its service partners, said a statement from Dubai Airports. It follows the successful completion of the preceding stages involving mapping of the airport’s carbon footprint, and implementation of projects to minimise carbon emissions, it stated. Jamal Zaal, vice president of safety and sustainability at Dubai Airports said: “As part of our commitment to achieve environmental sustainability, Dubai Airports has introduced several environmental initiatives to drive a cleaner and more sustainable future. The Level 3 carbon accreditation is the result of our collective efforts in that direction and a reflection of our support and commitment to local and international initiatives.” A number of green initiatives are underway including the project to replace ground service vehicle fleet with electric and hybrid vehicles, while existing light fixtures are being replaced with 150,000 LED bulbs to cut energy consumption. Earlier this year, Dubai Airports completed the installation of a 15,000-panel solar array at Terminal 2, the largest at any airport in the Middle East.

Dubai airport logs over 41 million passengers in 2019

Dubai International Airport (DXB) welcomed 41.3 million passengers in the first half of 2019, maintaining its position as the world’s largest international airport by traffic volume. The closure of one of its two runways between 16 April and 30 May reduced the airport’s capacity and contributed to a decline in traffic of 5.6% year on year. A total of 41,277,749 customers travelled through DXB during the first half of 2019. The closure of the southern runway for refurbishment halved the hub’s runway capacity leading to a reduction of 32% in passenger flights over a 45-day period, according to a DXB press statement. Total passenger flights during the first six months of 2019 totalled 178,383, down 11.6% from last year, also due to the 45-day closure of the southern runway. India remained DXB’s top destination country by passenger numbers, with traffic for the first half reaching 5.7 million customers – propelled mainly by top city destinations Mumbai and Delhi. Saudi Arabia was number two on the list with 3.1 million customers, followed closely by the UK with 2.8 million customers.

Dubai Airports moves towards solar-powered future

Dubai Airports and Etihad Energy Services Company have announced the successful installation of a solar energy system comprising 15,000 photovoltaic panels at Dubai International’s Terminal 2 – the largest at any airport in the region. The solar project will generate 7,483,500 Kilowatt hour (Kwh) energy annually for Dubai Airports, resulting in savings worth AED 3.3 million (USD 0.90 Million). The project will reduce existing Terminal 2 load by approximately 29% while also slashing annual carbon emissions by 3,243 metric tonnes, which is equivalent to 53,617 tree seedlings grown for ten years or 688 passenger vehicles driven for one year. Etihad Energy Services Company is a leading energy service company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA). The project is part of Shams Dubai, DEWA’s first smart initiative that aims to promote the use of clean renewable energy sources. The programme encourages installation of solar panels on rooftops to generate electricity from solar power and connecting it to DEWA’s grid to transfer surplus generation. Michael Ibbitson, executive vice president of infrastructure and technology at Dubai Airports, said: “Dubai Airports has undertaken a variety of green initiatives over the past several years to limit our carbon footprint and support Dubai’s goal for a 30% reduction in the city’s energy consumption by 2030.” “These include the use of energy efficient fittings, the optimisation of cooling systems, the installation of energy efficient bulbs and many others. In addition to enabling us to limit our carbon footprint while cutting costs, these initiatives also support our long-term vision for a carbon neutral future in line with the aviation industry’s target,” he added.

Dubai Airports, Disney launch new recycling initiative

Dubai Airports and Disney Middle East are teaming up to raise awareness of recycling and the need to eliminate single-use plastics this July at Dubai International Airport (DXB) with a little help from Forky, the unlikely hero from Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 4. Starting on 7 July and continuing for the busy month of July at DXB, Toy Story 4 activity stations will be dotted around each of the airport’s four concourses where some of the eight million expected passengers will be shown how to transform recyclable materials into toys by making their own Forky. There will also be a competition to ‘Find Forky’ and win a magical family trip to Paris. “This summer we are making the topic of recycling fun for children and the young at heart with some of the much-loved characters from Toy Story 4, by inviting them to bring their single-use plastics to our craft stations and helping them turn it into their own toy,” Matt Horobin, director of brand engagement at Dubai Airports said. “Last month we announced our intention to eliminate single-use plastics from all customer areas of our two airports and this is an interesting way of bringing our younger customers on the journey with us by showing them how important it is to be mindful of what we consider trash,” he added. As an airport operator welcoming over 90 million passengers per year in DXB and DWC, Dubai Airports has already taken responsibility for its environmental impact and actively recycles at every opportunity. Annually over 43,000 tonnes of paper, glass and other waste collected from the airports passenger spaces is recycled and in the past six months alone, 16 tonnes of single use plastic bottles and bottle caps have been collected and disposed of.

Dubai Airports reduces CO2 emissions by 2,224 tonnes

Dubai Airports’ efforts to reduce its carbon footprint delivered energy savings of 5.17 million kWh in 2016 across Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) – the equivalent to powering 235 homes for a full year, the operator has revealed. Overview of Dubai World Central The report was issued just ahead of Dubai Airports’ participation in the Earth Hour on March 25 – when all non-essential lights across both DXB and DWC switched off for one hour. The energy savings are the result of a range of initiatives including the installation of systems, active participation in events such as Earth Hour and World Clean Up Day, as well as new projects including the solar panels on the Concourse D building that began operation with the opening of the new facility in February 2016. “In line with the long-term goals of aviation industry, the Airports Council International and ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation), Dubai Airports' vision is to ultimately attain carbon-neutral growth. Our achievements in 2016 represent an important step in that direction,” said Michael Ibbitson, executive vice president of technology & infrastructure at Dubai Airports. “Dubai Airports is constantly seeking to implement innovative ideas and new technologies to limit our environmental impact in full support of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Environmental Strategy, the Dubai Plan and UAE Vision 2021.” A large proportion of total savings resulted from the replacement of traditional lighting with LEDs for street lighting, signage and the airfield, as well as the installation of intelligent occupancy sensors at both airports. The optimisation of chiller plants at DXB and DWC with the installation of energy-saving variable frequency drives for pumps and automation for demand-based flow also helped energy conservation efforts during the year. The solar panels installed on the roof of Concourse D at DXB and at the Police facility at DWC also made significant contribution to Dubai Airports’ energy conservation efforts by generating power. DXB and DWC became the first airports in the GCC states and two of 56 internationally to achieve Level 2 accreditation from the ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme in 2016.
