Rosewood Hotel Group receives coveted GSTC certification

Rosewood Hotel Group recently received the prestigious Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification, including its key properties in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.  The certification, granted by Bureau Veritas, an accredited GSTC certification body, applies to 47 properties across Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, New World Hotels & Resorts, and Carlyle & Co.  GSTC chief executive Randy Durband said: “We extend our congratulations to Rosewood Hotel Group on achieving GSTC certification at a group-wide level, and particularly, twelve certified properties of their portfolio are among the first in their respective countries to receive GSTC-Accredited Certification, the highest level of assurance of credible validation of hotel sustainability claims.” Durband also expressed hope that Rosewood Hotel Group’s achievement will serve as an inspiration for others to embrace and prioritise sustainability with rigorous and credible external verification. Team effort The GSTC certification is a result of efforts steered by Rosewood Impacts, the group’s roadmap for delivering positive impact on all its communities and our shared planet, which reflects the Group’s ambition to become a purpose-led organization.  This year, Rosewood Impacts will continue to empower Rosewood’s community and ecosystems towards a more sustainable future by launching a group-wide carbon-neutrality journey, welcoming five additional properties as Impact Trailblazers, and rolling out more business-with-purpose restaurants at select properties.  With GSTC certification, Rosewood Hotel Group solidifies its role as a leader in sustainable hospitality, ensuring its properties, including Rosewood Abu Dhabi and Rosewood Jeddah, meet the highest environmental and social standards. Meeting stringent standards The certification verified that the Group’s operational standards and guest experiences align with four key GSTC Criteria: effective sustainable management, social and economic benefits for local communities, preservation of cultural heritage, and environmental responsibility.  A key differentiator of the Group’s ethos is its commitment that sustainability and social impact initiatives are not mandates but core pillars, in which each property embraces every detail: from eco-conscious culinary creations and educational guest programming to sustainable design elements alongside those that celebrate local heritage and artistry, to partnerships that uplift local livelihoods. Rosewood’s vice-president of impact and sustainability Mehvesh Mumtaz Ahmed was moved to remark: “We endeavour to create experiences that are exciting and meaningful, and elevated yet responsible. The GSTC certification is a welcome endorsement that we are affixing this enrichment lens on every part of our business, from hiring, supply chain, and partnerships to procurement, design and more.”

Rosewood Miyakojima opens with 55 keys in Japan

Rosewood Miyakojima sits on an untouched peninsula on a tropical island located off the south coast of mainland Japan. Known as the “Island of Prayers”, Miyakojima is a spiritually significant destination, offering discerning domestic and international travellers a rare immersion into the unique Ryukyu culture of the region, embraced by verdant landscapes and the calm of the ocean. As the first Japanese property from Rosewood, Rosewood Miyakojima marks a new chapter for the group as it expands further into Asia, strengthening its position in the region. Featuring four restaurants and bars spanning Japanese and international cuisine, an infinity pool by the beach, a private pavilion overlooking the ocean to house weddings and special occasions, and a wellness concept through Rosewood’s pioneering Asaya brand, the destination offers immersive experiences rooted in the local culture, its spirituality and its connection to nature. With a blend of relaxation, adventure and highly personalized services, the resort is an attractive destination for families searching for a luxury travel experience, as well as those seeking a private retreat in a one-of-a-kind destination. Ryukyu-Inspired Design Philosophy Drawing from the history, landscape and culture of the Ryukyu Islands, the design philosophy at Rosewood Miyakojima is rooted in sustainability and harmony with the surrounding environment. The resort’s unique design was completed by Studio Piet Boon, the renowned Dutch design studio founded by Piet Boon, who was intrigued by what he calls “a serene and unspoiled destination.” Thoughtfully designed to frame the surrounding landscape, the resort’s architecture accentuates the natural beauty from the very first moment guests arrive. Prioritizing natural materials, clean lines, and textures that reflect the island’s pristine beaches and turquoise waters, every detail was meticulously conceived to create a harmonious guest experience.  Local Ryukyu stone plays a central role in the architectural palette, used in various ways to establish a strong connection between the resort and the island’s natural aesthetics. “At Studio Piet Boon, we feel a deep connection to Japanese culture, particularly in design principles such as simplicity, balance, and  harmony” says Piet Boon. “These elements were essential in shaping the property, allowing us to create a seamless blend of luxury and tranquility—one that celebrates both the local environment and our shared  design values.” Accommodations By The Miyako Blue Overlooking Oura Bay with direct access to an idyllic beach, the resort has 55 guest accommodations— each with breathtaking views of Miyakojima’s famous blue waters. Bathed in natural light, with accents  that draw on local materials such as the local ‘Ryukyu limestone’, the villas and houses draw inspiration from the serenity of Ryukyu architecture, creating of Japanese and Ryukyu interiors, creating a calm atmosphere that seamlessly connects the interiors with the natural surroundings. Accommodations are divided into five different zones across the peninsula, each showcasing a distinct aspect of Miyakojima’s natural beauty and allowing guests to experience different sides of the island. Villas take their names from the Okinawan dialect, referring to the topography of each location: Daya villas look  out onto the breathtaking cliffside; Mui villas sit in the peace of the mountains; Miji villas are on the tip of  the peninsula by the sea; Uru villas are directly on the sand; and Isu villas are nestled on the rocky beach.  Three houses—UPRA, KUURA and KAMII—are the largest properties on the resort, and are located on the cliffside, rocky beach and the tip of the peninsula respectively. Sporting incredible views of the sea, the houses offer 3-meter-high ceilings and barbecue grills on an open terrace, with dedicated butler service. A Quartet of Culinary Experiences The culinary offerings at Rosewood Miyakojima span four distinct dining experiences, each rooted in the island’s provenance—from reimagined local delicacies to longevity-inspired dishes rich in the vitamins and minerals typical to Ryukyuan cuisine. The all-day dining concept NAGI offers a curated fusion of Italian cuisine and Japanese cooking techniques; MAAS is an oceanside restaurant that highlights the simple flavors of the sea, showcasing freshly caught fish from the surrounding waters; and YUKUU is the resort’s poolside bar offering a curated selection of drinks and casual dishes with panoramic views of the ocean.  Opening later in 2025, CHOMA will bring together four distinct areas of washoku (Japanese cuisine)— sushi, tempura, teppanyaki, and yakitori—crafted by specialist chefs and served in an open pavilion overlooking the sea. Okinawan Wellness Offerings Okinawa is home to some of the longest-living people on earth, known for their innately healthy and easygoing lifestyles. Combining this time-honored wisdom with Asaya, Rosewood’s pioneering wellbeing concept, the curated program at Asaya Spa will include specialty therapies informed by healing rituals rooted in Okinawan heritage, including a herbal compress and a “medicine of life” treatment, utilizing medicinal herbs and Miyako Island sea salt to foster relaxation and nourish the skin. Active experiences invite guests to try their hand at martial arts in the birthplace of karate, under the guidance of a Miyakojima karate sensei, while fostering both physical health and a sense of inner peace. Asaya Spa at Rosewood Miyakojima includes 6 treatment rooms, a yoga studio and a fully equipped fitness center. Nature-Inspired Adventures   Nestled in sugarcane fields and surrounded by the ocean (which is such a vibrant hue that it has its own nickname: the Miyako Blue), Rosewood Miyakojima showcases the diverse geographical landscape of the island—imbued at every turn with adventure and discovery. From taking to the water to see Miyakojima’s majestic sea turtles or snorkeling over coral reefs, to learning about the ancient and sustainable practice of spearfishing, guests are invited to connect with nature on a deeper level and become acquainted with the slow, spiritual approach to life that Miyakojima is known for. With a strong network of local connections and an unparalleled location, the resort also offers a range of one-of-a-kind experiences rooted in a sense of place including togei (Japanese pottery), adan (weaving with leaves) and a host of other traditional Japanese arts. Guests of all ages are invited to immerse themselves into the local creativity of Miyakojima and find inspiration in the cultural heritage of an under-explored part of the world. Noriko Nakayama, Managing Director of Rosewood Miyakojima, brings over 20 years of expertise in luxury hospitality, along with a master’s degree in environmental science from Yale University. A dedicated environmentalist and turtle expert, she offers a unique perspective on the ecology of Miyakojima. “It is with great pleasure that we introduce Rosewood’s first property in Japan on the beautiful island of Miyakojima—a destination rich in cultural heritage and natural splendor. Rosewood Miyakojima embarks on an exciting journey to embody Rosewood’s A Sense of Place philosophy, offering a curated selection of experiences, from exceptional culinary journeys to immersive encounters with local wildlife. I am especially excited to invite our guests to become sea turtle ambassadors, where together we will explore Miyakojima’s undiscovered ecology and gain a deeper understanding of these incredible creatures that call the island home.” For Younger Guests At Rosewood Miyakojima, families will find enriching experiences designed to create unforgettable moments for young guests and their parents. The Rose Buds program caters to newborns and toddlers up to three years old, providing thoughtfully selected baby care essentials, while The Rosewood Explorers Club offers children aged four to twelve a world of discovery. The goal of the program is to provide creative and educational activities that are rooted in a sense of place, providing younger guests immersion into the local culture—from potpourri making and origami to sea glass crafts and temporary tattoos inspired by hajichi, Okinawa’s traditional skin art. They can also take part in Old Enough!, an experience inspired by  the beloved Japanese TV show, where children complete a solo errand for the first time to foster  independence and confidence. The babysitting service provided by expert caregivers ensures peace of mind, allowing parents time to relax, rejuvenate and explore.

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts® launches new brand campaign

The magic of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts® is founded on unique experiences and deep cultural connections created for its audiences across 34 properties. This immersive approach to travel and affinity is celebrated through Rosewood’s new campaign, Discovered at Rosewood. Curiosity to uncover the heart of a place enriched by its people and culture sits at the center of the campaign, illustrating Rosewood’s guiding philosophy. Shot by Jo Metson Scott, known for her intimate way of telling human stories through portraiture and documentary filmmaking, Discovered at Rosewood highlights how each Rosewood destination invites guests to explore the world in a way that envelops them in local traditions, communities, and lifestyles. It emphasises the brand's dedication to offering transformational stays through cultural immersion, the integration of local craftsmanship, and A Sense of Place®. Rosewood's newest property, Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, was chosen for the new campaign. A restorative lakeside retreat located near Salzburg in Austria, the restored 15th-century castle has breathed new life into the rich traditions of Austrian countryside living to offer unparalleled luxury experiences. The campaign shines a light on local artisans, craftsmen, and key cultural figures of Schloss Fucshl, showcasing Rosewood's dedication to discovery and connection through the lens of craft, sustainable farming, and sense of place. The campaign features fixtures of the Salzburg community discovered by Rosewood, including Gerald Aichriedler, a local paddleboard craftsman showcasing the art of slow craft. The campaign explores his methodical practice, producing a handful of paddle boards from a single tree. Gerhard Langmaier, the Fischermeister of Lake Fuschl who works in a circular fishing tradition, displays how circularity has been a way of life for generations at the local Fischerei and embodies Rosewood’s approach to food. The campaign also follows Austrian creative Anna Phillipa Wolf, who has collaborated with designer Rick Owens for over ten years. Rosewood has long celebrated culture and craftmanship, collaborating with a roster of exceptional talent from around the world. Earlier this year, Rosewood Front Row was conceptualized as a global culture series, providing a selection of art and culture-focused activities, inspiring talks and culinary partnerships. Rosewood Luang Prabang pays homage to Lao Heritage on a Sunset River Cruise

Rosewood Luang Prabang announces an enriching enhancement to its guest experiences through a new initiative that celebrates the rich heritage of Lao textiles. In a move that aligns perfectly with its "Sense of Place" philosophy, the luxury resort has introduced new blankets, cushion covers, and other soft furnishings aboard its Sunset River Cruise as a tribute to the cultural and artistic traditions of Laos. The soft furnishings, made from textiles sourced by textile expert Dr. Linda S. McIntosh, offer guests a unique insight into the culture, history, and beauty of the region. A research associate for the Tracing Patterns Foundation and an independent researcher renowned for her work on Southeast Asian handwoven textiles, Dr. McIntosh has meticulously selected textiles that embody the theme of "Khao" or Rice, exclusively for Rosewood Luang Prabang. The "Khao" theme is expressed through various shades of yellow and green, symbolizing the rice plant at different stages of its growth cycle, from the ripening greens to the harvest-ready yellows, complemented by hues of blue that recall the color of a clear sky. This color palette not only represents the agrarian lifestyle of Laos but also brings the beauty of the country's natural landscape onto the Rosewood Luang Prabang's Sunset River Cruise. “It is exciting that Rosewood Luang Prabang is embracing Laos’s valuable textile heritage. Lao textiles embody the culture of Laos with motifs symbolizing its flora and fauna. Lao textiles are also truly beautiful, worth all the admiring gazes they receive, and the Lao textiles donning the Rosewood boat exemplify their splendor and significance,” said Dr. Linda S. McIntosh. The selected textiles include a special carpet design known as River Current or "Nam Lai," handwoven by the skilled artisans of Laos. This design not only adds a touch of elegance and comfort to the cruise experience but also showcases the incredible craftsmanship of local weavers. Highlighting Rosewood's commitment to supporting female artistry and local communities, the textiles have been sourced from the weavers of Nikone in Vientiane and the Tai Lue weavers of Ban Nayang Neua in Luang Prabang. The inclusion of floral designs, emblematic of the Buddhist Lao and carrying auspicious meanings, significantly enriches the cultural narrative. These designs reflect the deep connection between the people of Laos and their environment, where cotton, an essential material for the textiles, grows abundantly alongside rice. “By integrating these beautiful textiles into our Sunset River Cruise, we not only showcase the unique artistry of Laos but also foster a deeper connection between our guests and the local culture as we continue to celebrate the rich heritage and natural beauty of the country,” said Adrien Pons, Resort Manager of Rosewood Luang Prabang. Guests interested in diving deeper into the history and significance of these beautiful textiles have the opportunity to learn more from Dr. McIntosh herself at Gallery ASIAMA with an immersive experience that invites guests to appreciate not just the beauty of the textiles, but their cultural importance and the stories they tell. Presentation of a Textile Topic at Gallery ASIAMA. Dr. McIntosh, internationally renowned Southeast Asian textile expert, will introduce you to museum-quality, traditional textiles of Laos. She can also personalize the topic on request depending on the guests’ interests. Exclusive Visit to Villa Azurin. Visit Dr. Linda S. McIntosh at her home Villa Azurin 20 kilometers downriver on the Mekong River. She will introduce you to museum-quality, traditional textiles of Laos using textiles from ASIAMA Gallery to illustrate the talk. Rosewood Luang Prabang's initiative to furnish its Sunset River Cruise with handwoven textiles sourced by Dr. McIntosh exemplifies the resort's dedication to creating meaningful experiences that connect guests with the local culture and heritage with a wealth of activities that also include an architectural walking tour with a conservationist and former advisor to UNESCO, a visit with an artist devoted to preserving local artistic traditions. Visit a weaving center specializing in weaving and embroidering Luang Prabang-style textiles. Located in Chomphet District, Dr. McIntosh will lead you across the Mekong River to this secluded textile center and silk farm. Linda will explain the processes and the textiles being created in-situ. Time permitting, guests may want to visit North Chan Village Pottery Center, the sole-surviving pottery village in North Laos.
