Its dynamic cities, culinary delights, and rich heritage continue to draw millions of visitors annually from Australia, with the number surpassing one million per year recently, showcasing its soaring popularity and strong travel ties between the two countries. Winter is a magical time in Tokyo when the city transforms into a sparkling wonderland through spectacular illuminations. Additionally, Yomiuriland theme park’s annual Jewellumination show offers jewel-colored lights unique to the venue, enhancing Tokyo’s winter charm. This year, Tokyo’s winter illuminations have been scaled up significantly, with Tokyo Dome City alone boasting over 1,000,000 lights, setting a festive scene complete with original themed light shows, Christmas markets, and even ice skating rinks with real ice. Marunouchi’s street lights extend from the station to the Imperial Palace’s gardens, all powered by renewable energy sources, creating stunning champagne-gold shimmers throughout the city. Visitors can enjoy the dynamic interplay of light, music, and festive decorations that turn Tokyo’s winter nights into an enchanting experience that appeals to locals and international visitors alike. For Australian travellers, Tokyo’s winter illuminations are a splendid highlight complementing Japan’s wider appeal—from vibrant urban life to serene hot springs and world-class winter sports. Agoda: Tokyo and Seoul are the destinations of choice for Thai families for the school holidays

Digital travel platform Agoda's latest report on travel trends for the Thai school holidays shows higher travel interest for both domestic and international destinations. Family travel interest to Seoul during the October school break rose significantly this year, seen in a 33 percent year-on-year increase in searches, overtaking Shanghai as the fastest-growing destination. Meanwhile, Tokyo maintains its position as the top family travel destination among Thais for a second consecutive year. Outbound travel from Thailand went up three percent during the school break season compared to the same period last year. According to Agoda's country director in Thailand Akaporn Rodkong: “School holidays are such a special time for families to reconnect and make lasting memories. At Agoda, we truly understand how precious these moments are, which is why our platform is designed to help families explore the world with ease and confidence, knowing they have the best deals on accommodations, flights and activities. We want families to focus on what really matters like cherishing quality time together, creating joyful experiences, and building treasured memories that will last a lifetime, all while enjoying a worry-free travel experience.” Seoul stands out, but Tokyo still holds the top spot Among the destinations seeing strong momentum, Seoul, South Korea, stands out with the highest growth in international travel interest with a 33 percent increase in travel searches among families with children. This growing appeal may be partly driven by the global popularity of cultural exports like the hit Netflix offering K-Pop Demon Hunters which captured the imagination of young audiences worldwide. The city’s exciting attractions, diverse cuisine, and pop culture influence makes Seoul an increasingly attractive destination for Thai families seeking a school break getaway with something for all ages. Meanwhile, Agoda reports that Tokyo continues to hold the top spot as the most searched international destination among Thai families for the October school break. Tokyo’s pleasant autumn weather and abundance of family-friendly attractions makes it an ideal choice for a memorable getaway, with world-famous entertainment options such as Tokyo Disneyland, DisneySea and Ueno Zoo. At the same time, October’s cooler temperatures and cozy fall colours create the perfect setting for quality family time. Other key players Hong Kong takes the second spot with family attractions like Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park. In third place, Osaka delights families with Universal Studios Japan, the Osaka Aquarium, and Osaka Castle. Singapore ranks fourth, offering kid-approved fun at the Singapore Zoo, Sentosa Island, and more. Domestically, Thai families are also showing a strong interest in travel closer to home, with accommodation searches up 26 percent compared to last year. Families show strong interest in beach destinations, with Pattaya leading the pack with a 14 percent increase in searches as the most popular destination. Hua Hin follows closely with a 12 percent rise in searches, offering a relaxing seaside escape with resorts that cater to kids, plus fun stops like Vana Nava Water Jungle and animal encounters at Hua Hin Safari. Ranked third, Bangkok saw a 20 percent increase in travel interest this year; the Thai capital remains a hub of activity with the new Jurassic theme park and seasonal Halloween events. Nature getaways are also popular, with Chonburi seeing a 30 percent increase in interest, drawing families with attractions like Khao Kheow Open Zoo and Ninja Park. Up 23 percent in terms of searches, Khao Yai rounds out the top five as a refreshing nature escape with scenic hikes and animal farms. All these destinations are just a short drive from Bangkok, making them great choices for a short and fun family escape.

Tokyo is the world’s best workcation city for 2025: IWG

Tokyo City viewed from high up at sunset, Japan Tokyo has been named the world’s best workcation city for 2025 in International Workplace Group’s (IWG) third annual Work from Anywhere Barometer. As flexible work enables professionals to remain productive on the go, Mumbai stands out as India’s top entry among leading Asian cities like Singapore, Seoul, Beijing, and Jakarta. This year’s list also sees Tokyo surpass global contenders such as Rio de Janeiro and last year’s winner, Budapest. New research from IWG, the world’s largest platform for work and provider of flexible workspaces, highlights the rising popularity of ‘workcations’ among white-collar professionals. Findings from this year’s Barometer show that six in 10 (60%) of hybrid workers are more likely to extend a holiday to work remotely than last year, while 86% cite the availability of flexible workspaces as a major factor in their destination choice.  ‘Workcations’—where travellers combine work and leisure at their destinations to extend holidays—have surged in popularity since hybrid working became the de facto working model for many. This year’s research shows that 78% of employees surveyed consider a ‘work from anywhere’ policy an important factor when evaluating a new job, while 87% say the freedom to work from anywhere boosts their productivity. Hybrid workers also report reduced burnout (85%) and improved work-life balance (87%). With advances in technology and the widespread adoption of flexible work models, professionals can stay fully productive from virtually any location, whether close to home or halfway across the world. With over 4,000 flexible workspace locations in more than 120 countries, IWG’s network has a strong presence across all 40 leading ‘workcation’ cities featured in this year’s Work from Anywhere Barometer. Each city was scored on a scale of one to 10 across 12 criteria—including climate, accommodation, transport, broadband speed, and the availability of flexible workspaces—along with new categories such as digital nomad visas and proximity to nature.  2025 Top 10 Workcation Cities   1 Tokyo 6 Beijing 2 Rio de Janeiro 7 Lisbon 3 Budapest 8 Rome 4 Seoul 9 Paris   5 Barcelona 10 Valletta   New Entrants in the Global Top 10   Seoul (#4): Recognised for its strong broadband infrastructure, efficient transport system, and newly streamlined digital nomad visa scheme. Rome (#8): Celebrated for its outstanding cuisine, historic surroundings, and the launch of Italy’s national digital nomad visa in January 2025. Paris (#9): Scores high for its rich culture, excellent transport, and diverse co-working options, despite higher general costs. Valletta (#10): Secures a top-10 position with its Mediterranean climate, historic charm, and compact, accessible size.   2025 Top Asian Workcation Cities   #1 Tokyo #17 Jakarta #4 Seoul #18 Manila #6 Beijing #36 Mumbai #15 Singapore #38 Hong Kong   Tokyo takes the crown (91/120) Tokyo scored highly for its exceptional broadband speeds, transport infrastructure, safety, culture, and new digital nomad visa launched in April 2024, which grants stays up to 12 months at a competitive cost. The city also benefits from proximity to mountains, coastal regions, and national parks – ideal for hybrid workers seeking an exciting urban atmosphere alongside natural escapes.  Mumbai: Productivity Meets Culture (73/120) Mumbai makes a strong impression as an emerging workcation hub in the new barometer.  No matter where hybrid workers are based, whether in the bustling financial district or the quieter corners of the city, they can stay well-connected and productive with reliable broadband and a wide range of flex workspaces. Beyond work, Mumbai offers a wide mix of experiences as diverse as the city itself.  Professionals can discover iconic sights like the sparkling Queen’s Necklace at Marine Drive, which is lined with celebrated Art Deco buildings. The city is famous for its diverse culinary scene, from beloved street food to fine dining, and a vibrant culture of music, dance, and theatre. As one of Asia's leading economic centers, Mumbai offers a refined urban experience balance while remaining affordable for day-to-day living. For those seeking a respite from the urban energy, serene hill stations like Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar are a short drive away. This unique blend of high-octane city life, rich cultural immersion, and accessible nature makes Mumbai a compelling workcation destination. Emerging workcation destinations for 2025 This year’s barometer welcomed 10 new cities: Tokyo, Seoul, Rome, Cairo, Mexico City, Cape Town, Prague, Melbourne, Orlando, and Reykjavik. These cities scored particularly well on newly introduced criteria that assessed the availability and cost of digital nomad visas, as well as their proximity to beaches, mountains, and national parks. This reflects hybrid workers’ growing preference for destinations that offer easy access to nature, with 75% stating that natural surroundings are a major factor in their choice. Beyond reducing burnout and improving work-life balance, being able to work from anywhere also drives productivity and strengthens talent retention. According to the new IWG Hybrid Working Productivity Report, produced in partnership with global consultancy Arup, adopting flexible workspaces as part of a hybrid strategy could boost productivity by up to 11% over the next five years. Companies worldwide are seeing significant gains: from enhanced productivity to stronger retention and attraction of top talent[2]. Workplace flexibility, in particular, plays a pivotal role, with flexible arrangements lowering voluntary turnover by up to 20%, and employees being three times more likely to stay in roles that offer a variety of working options. Mark Dixon, Founder and CEO of IWG, said: “We’re seeing more workers than ever extending their trips to work remotely or choosing to spend longer periods abroad as digital nomads. Thanks to hybrid working and cloud technology, employees now have the freedom to work wherever and whenever suits them best – whether that’s a local flexible workspace or a co-working centre on the other side of the world. For many, the days of long daily commutes are over, and there is more freedom to work in new locations. This trend is here to stay with many companies adopting flexible working and WFA policies, particularly over the summer months for the long-term, which not only improves work-life balance and reduces burnout but also delivers significant productivity gains. In fact, our recent report in partnership with Arup has revealed that businesses empowering employees to use local workspaces and offices as part of their work location strategy could boost productivity by 11% over the next five years, making it a clear win-win for both employees and employers in the global battle for talent.”
